So I'm sitting here watching this show and decide to make a bash critique thread.

Here's some basic information on the show. It airs on Weds at 9:30pm eastern on the DIY channel. The host is Janna Robinson a "Lifestyle-Technology Expert". Here's the link to the official page Hollywood Hi-Tech

So tonight I'm watching the one where they update Adam Carollas' podcast studio. I guess I'm an idiot because Janna, the Lifestyle-Technology Expert, informed us that PTZ stands for Point Tilt Zoom. Wow this whole time I keep telling people it's Pan Tilt Zoom, I feel like such an idiot. And now I can tell clients that they are robotic cameras.

How many guys out there still crimp coax? Did they seriously put a 22" monitor 8' off the ground and at least 15' away for the guests to watch? Anyone else catch that they ran the power cord for the 22" through the wall? And you can see the video cable too.
Who says you can't put 61" plasmas up on cantilever mounts using toggle bolts? <---Thanks Ernie ;)

I've read the other thread pertaining to this show.  Since I don't have the DIY Network I haven't seen it, but I did take a look at the company doing the installations.  Seems to be a reputable company, no?

I wonder why they would do something so stupid as to put a power cord in a wall (On National TV).  I hope the local Fire Marshall is a fan of the show.

Worse yet, this appears to be a CEDIA endorsed project. Hmmmm? CEDIA pissing away their member's dues? Seems so out of character...

I was pretty disappointed in the show. Janna is just annoying. Any idea what the budget is that they use or is it up to the client? Personally, I would have put in one less camera (at $3k+) and spent a bit more on acoustics. Hanging ugly curtains just doesn't do it.

I don't get DIY either so I just checked out what I assume was the first episode online on their website. Did they seriously just tint the windows to a useless frost and drywall over some of the windows? Holy shit. I don't think I've ever had a client who would have signed off on that one.

Especially with those views!

I don't really care how inaccurate or unprofessional some of these projects are, it's a TV show that is showing off our profession in a good light IMO. Why is that not a good thing? It gets customers excited about what's out there and there isn't many aveunes that do that. Plus I think Janna is hot.

Off my soapbox - Harmony? Really?

janna may be hot but that all goes away when she opens her mouth....

doing projects less than professional IS NOT putting this industry in a good light... it makes us all look bad!

Actually Ed,
Drew is right. The projects may not live up to our standards and truthfully frustrate the hell out of me but the average homeowner doesn't pick up on anything other than there are specialty companies out there that do this kind of work and Jana makes it sound affordable.
Shes an idiot and says some stupid sh*t but will open doors where we can take over and set it straight. I hate the show and love the show at the same time. It is a move in the right direction for our industry and the Cedia endorsement is probably the most useful money I have ever seen them spend.

How many people call the geek squad every day because they don't know there are custom integrators out there? How many people call an electrician for A/V projects every day? This channel is very popular with our demographic and could stand to pay dividends for us as an industry.

Kudos to Jana and DIY for a job poorly done. :)

You know this show really got me thinking, this is really the first show that has to do with our industry actually going through the installation process. We all know its garbage and they dont know what the hell they are doing.

I would assume that True professional Electricians, Landscapers,Plumbers, builders look at these shows with a heavy head hitting their palms. I am no professional plumber/electrician so im sure they pick up on things like we do on this AV installation.

The company that does the installation was featured on CE-Pro "A Day in the life of a custom installer" They seem like they do really good work. I only hope is that this show forces them to cut corners and its not what their true work is like.

Who knows though

It harms us simply because if the lady on tv says we fan do it like this.... It's not about budget it's about doing the work professionally within the budget!

The lady on tv just ran the power cord threw the wall. What do you mean we can't do that and we have to run a new outlet!

Over all the show for the masses is ok but unless they step up the professionalism it's bad for the industry
