I looked hard and long at the ubiquiti gear and was scared away from them because:
1. the unifi line has many problems with their proprietary poe and heat issues causing failures.
2. all of their gear require shielded cat cable. Not saying it won't work if you use utp, but if it fails the first thing they will ask you is did you use stp.

It's supposed to be easy to set up, but again I heard some complaints.

I'm not a network novice but also not a master. If someone can shed more light on these issues would be great...

Look into Intellinet. Low budget homes. I use their routers, waps, and switches. Not a single issue to date. Just installed their cheap 300N wireless access point in two outdoor jobs. Super simple. Matched the ssid from router and done.

Hope this helps. Tech support is good but they expect your rep to provide support. Once I found the direct support line, I have had no issues with support.
