So I have a client that has a 5 or 6 year old Elan system with security, Hvac, and Pool Integration. Well long story short the Pool controller was replaced and now it will not connect to the system. The Jandy parts are correct and have been replaced twice and I cannot imagine what the problem is.

There is also a Home Logic Serial Brick in the system that allows for HVAC scheduling and touch-panel override. When I send the jandy through the serial brick and back to the ss1 via ip I get feedback but it scrolls too fast to be useful and eventually it just stops responding to anything.

I dont know if there is anyone who can suggest something to try to remedy this situation but I can tell you that Elan is the worst company ever. There is no one left there that can remotely offer support of their old system design that has been discontinued only a few months now.

One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.

I believe Homelogic also made a special pool & spa serial brick for Jandy because their communication is slightly different. Also, while the serial brick has two ports (a 485 and 232) only one can work at a time.

But I wouldnt really expect any of the new tech support staff to know any of this stuff, because the new controllers dont need the serial bricks, and they barely have any comprehension of the new products.

Contact Ben in Marblehead, he is still around.

The jury is still out for me on Elan, but if you know how to get to the original Homelogic guys you can usually get your problem solved.

Ben or Eric V. in Marblehead.
Have the list of ALL of the boxes connected, and prepare to remotely let them into the system while you are on the phone.

The first problem i see is the Jandy going through the Serial brick. If this is a 5-6 year old system there would be no connectivity with Homelogic and ELAN parts. The Jandy should be plugged directly into a COM port on the SS1.

Did you check the dip switches on the Jandy's protocol adapter to make sure the are correct? OFF,OFF,ON,OFF,ON,ON

I dont even see how that is possible.

edit: If you can get a hold of one of the old tech support guys in Kentucky, Im sure they can help you. They have all been with Elan for years, and know the products inside and out. It is a shame that Elan is letting them go.

Elan products are rock solid. We have had nothing but very good results with their hardware. Especially now that Viatools is not needed. But regarding tech support (and every other area of personnel) right now, is like shooting craps with loaded dice.

I dont worry about the hardware. Tech support and software, and innovation are what concern me.

Tech support will work out, hopefully for them they still have dealers by then. Its software and innovation where Elan has problems. How somebody can still sell a Via panel or use ViaTools is beyond me. Can you imagine if they never bought HL?

The guy who decided to shit can half the tech support staff and start over with all new guys half way across the country, during the biggest product rollout in Elan history is a genius.

Yet they still handled the HL purchase better then Russound did with vNet.

Dont forget they did the same with accounting, sales, and every other department except R&D.

They just washed their hands of all VIA!, so less tech support is needed. ;(
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

I have only ever seen via panels at some tour of homes, until we did a take over project. This project was just installed in the last 6 mos and was all Elan.

The only thing I can say about Via is that it should have been killed off 10 years ago. How a dealer can install that into a system is beyond me.

My understanding is that when via panels came out, they were the shit. But if someone installed them in a new system in the past year, they should have been dropped as dealers. :)
