Ed, I have had to do the same. Several years ago I found out through a client's son in law that the client had gone ape $hit crazy at a party bad mouthing my company. The son in law was embarrassed because the client was super drunk holding a party at his place when one of his 110V smoke detector's batteries died and, thus, it was chirping. I guess he just stumbled around the party telling everyone present that I had ripped him off and his HAI system (which, of course, was not tied to the 110V smokes) didn't work. I was a crook. Don't do business with us. Etc.

The next day, I went to his home, replaced the battery for his hungover a$$ and explained that he didn't have to pay me the $5k still owed if he lost my number. Permanently. I explained that his badmouthing me to so many people was the equivalent of opening a goose down pillow on the top of a mountain. Though he was sorry, he would never be able to pick up every feather he had released. Never heard from him again.

I fired one last year because of outrageous statements claiming that I told her she would get free service for LIFE after she refused to pay a $65 bill. I gave her the number to my old company and said she did not have to pay it but only if she did not call me again.

9 months later she called for more work and I agreed so as not to stir the pot in a building where I am near exclusive and have numerous good clients. She has paid all of her bills immediately and is friendly as can be (for now).

Funny how it can work out.

He has spent upper 6 figures with us over the years
And all has been good

And yes this was the total scope of this issue! 4 yr old dvr took a shit I replaced the power supply and main video card and it still wasn't working

Told him he had to pony up for a new one!

But in the four years he had the original one, DVRs have advanced so much and they come with so much more at the same price- if this is for a business, did he forget that he can write it off?

How about this, the first Hitchhiker episode, "Lovesounds." Rich guy's newly installed stereo system kills him while the Hi Fi guy bangs his wife.

Too bad you have to be put in the position Ed. I havent had to fire a Nickel and Dimer yet but my business is young. I do have one extremely wealthy client now though that wants a special rate, less than I charge everybody else. Sometimes it hurts your feelings and sometimes it just makes your blood boil.

ok guys... please dont feel bad for me.... its not the first client i have had to fire and im sure it wont be the last! i just needed to vent... i may be kind of a doucher on the forums and blunt but in real life with customers i am a professional!

im a lot of things but i am honest and i dont screw around with customers! i have never had my character questioned like that... ever! i take pride in the fact i have about 100mil worth of customer house keys in my possession and have earned the trust and respect of my clients.... they trust me with their most valuable possessions... their house and families!!!!

i have no intention of ever contacting this guy again and i have written him off already! his loss not mine!

I sold him what was right for his house! And what was needed to do what he wanted!

The dvr issue is the only issue!!!

Corey don't be a dick!!! I don't sell people stuff they don't need to make a system function! And I sure as hell dont over charge!

You are coming very close to calling me a sheister and that is an issue!!!!
18 years if doing this i know what the hell I'm doing and i don't need to justify anything to you!

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

If you said this to me I would ask you to write it down so I could read it 10 times to make sure I grasp what you are saying in this complex equation.

Been there, done that....

Regardless of how you handled it on the day of the incident, you needed to fire him. He stepped way over the line.
