I received a very interesting phone call today, it was a solicitor from home depot "custom install division" WTF?!? Apparently home depot is getting into the custom AV business and I was asked to join today. I asked what products they were distributing and she proudly said GE! i chuckled, asked her a few basic questions like what version of HDMI they were, will they be carrying baluns and f connectors and nothing but complete silence from her.

She then said after what seemed a lifetime (to her lol) that there are more HD's in my area then AV distributors and that i should be purchasing all my AV gear at my local HD. I chuckled, asked ok how does this work. Girl - Ohh certainly sir, we sign you up and you get a card that during check out you hand the clerk the card and you receive 15% cabling and accessories.

I chuckled and said well, what kind of message would i be sending my customer if i walked into there home with a Home Depot bag full of "High quality GE cables and accessories", that wouldn't go over to well with the kind of clients i deal with. She replied -"Let me assure you sir, these are some of the best cables in the industry"

I laughed and said i needed to go, im not interested. And even with 15% it wouldnt even come close to what i am paying for cables/connectors/wire. She caught me before i hung up and asked if she could send me a link to HD's AV webpage, i said ok (she was nice, im sure she just started so i was trying to be polite) and this is the link she supplied me.

Its funny, on CE pro i have been seeing HD banner ad's for "AV". I did a search and cant seem to find anything on HD's website on this "program" What the hell are they trying to accomplish? i dont get it. Have you guys received similar calls from HD?

Now that you mentioned this, I think I saw a HD ad in the print version of the latest CE Pro. I know there was a GE ad.

And ruin it for the rest of us.
Wireless speakers? Of course Sir. Choose the colour and size you like. As you don't seem to think sound quality is important, I will not plug them in.

Wow! I am such a newb. My ego just took a kick in the nuts, because I had no idea that you could extend HDMI 6 more feet with RCA cables.

I prefer HD to Lowes, in my area.

I buy a boat-load of stuff at HD, for my home.

In a pinch, HD is great for cat6 and most cable. If it's in stock.

I was going to join in with you guys in mocking HD until I saw that 50' roll of terminated rg6.

How did they know I needed exactly 14' of cable for the run and 36' spooled service loop at the rack?

Thats worth .26$ a foot right there.... Haters

Did we honestly expect they wouldnt get into this more? They sell everything else for all other home related trades, why wouldnt they try this?

Knowing the crap leveling they are selling here it does make me second guess some of the stuff I am buying for my home. How many plumber, electrician, door guy forums around the net complain constantly about the crap Depot offers yet it seems good enough to me when I pick it up and put it in my house not knowing any better.

We complain a lot about end users having access to "our" product but its no where near as bad as most other trades. Luckily (and dont take this the wrong way plumbers) our stuff is too complex for most end users. An end user that can "figure out" basic plumbing may not (read: almost never) have the same luck with even basic AV and automation.
