Here is the deal. We are doing an outdoor theater for a client (and periodic RC visitor) and have 7 CAT6 ran about 75 feet to a large weather proof outdoor enclosure that was going to house the HDMI Balun and the USB Balun for the PS 3 move.

After the yard started to take shape the client decided (and I agree) that the other side of the yard created a more natural feel for the theater. We can bury more wire from the outdoor enclosure but the distance is another 100 feet. Easy math....175 feet total. We have been having more luck with single balun stuff but I can get 2 wires if needed.

To compound the issue the junction point will now require an RJ45 coupler which could reduce bandwidth even further.

I have had great sucsess with the Snap single cable product but they dont recommend more than 130 feet and at that distance we would have to downres to 720p which means the equipment would all have to downres for his media room also since they are sharing equipment. This is not an option.

We found a Gefen balun that said 300 feet single CAT. Freds people seemed unsure about it and its special order. Any luck in the field guys? Any recommendations?

Ive also considered fiber. I could MAYBE pull all the way back to the headend using one or two of the CAT. But dont know much about Fiber. Do they make a burial wire? Is it pre-terminated? Who is making adapters for HDMI? Whats the cost?

Its rare in this industry that something just isnt possible regardless of cost (though I prefer the most cost effective solution). There has to be a solution.

Thanks!

Corey

The JAP looks interesting. I will have to look into that. We already have the Snap 4x4 Matrix in place. Is it possible to use just a transmitter and receiver for JAP or does it require a managed switch?

hmm... Don't know. Definitely worth giving them a call.

It may be overkill for a 1:1 transmit/receive scenario.

Hey Corey, I haven't done a full post on this yet along with our upcomng roadmap, but you will be able to purchase our new HDMI over HDBaseT extenders next month. You will be able to send the HDMI signal, bi directional IR and bi directional RS232 over a single CAT cable up to 330'. That will hopefully solve a lot of problems in the field for everyone.

I'll give you a shout later.

You can use the JAP products as a balun aka point to point and i have seen them work at 300+ ft..

I've shamefully neglected to look into the Zektor HDBase-T solution, but if they say it works, I would go that route. I'm guessing the HDBase-T solution is similiar to the JAP solution.

Not know the Zektor piece, I would say the Just Add Power Gen 2 solution would fit the bill great, as long as you don't need 5.1, in which case I think you'll need a 2nd Cat5 for digital audio baluns.

The ONLY thing that I have seen first hand that will definilitely work is a Fiber solution, we've used the Neopro Lightspider and its fantastic. But with this you'll have to retro a fiber in. If you retro anything I would just go the fiber route.

Wyrestorm has products that have worked well for us but we have only gone 100 or so feet. They now have HDBase-T solutions as well.

We did close to 200' with atlona's 8x8 over 2 cat5e with a keystone jack "extension" in between. 1080p/60 no problem. Lucky? :)
