Just left a house after doing a media room prewire. the electrician or whoever ran coax through the house did a major biff. They ran cat5 to all the tv locations and through a coax wall plate on the wall. The cat5 they used was in a black wrap similar to rg59 but when i looked at it it was cat5. customer wasnt aware of this and now wants to know what to do. He isnt sure if hes going to go with Time Warner or directv. anyway he was wondering if they have some sort of converter that will change it to coax. or does anyone have an idea that wont have to use rf remotes and extenders or baluns? Thanks

Is the drywall up?
If no, then get the electrician back.

The drywall is up upstairs, but downstairs is open. The electrican said he would fix his goof but was trying to get around doing that for him. Was trying not to have to set up the baluns and sell him a remote for each room. not that i would complain on making some extra money but i dont know if he wants to spend it

Electrician prob stapled the ethernet cable, might want to test it now rather than later.

you've GOT to have at least one, preferably two or three, RG6 to each location. That really is a major goof.

Uverse would work on Cat 5. That's a pretty significant limitation though.

It's sad to see new construction with only 1 coax to most locations. I was forced to pre-wire several smaller spec homes for one builder with only 1 coax to 3 locations, and 5 cat5e (Liv., MB, Br2, Br3 & Kit). I almost cried when job was done. If it wasn't for the fact that he also did few custom homes where I was able to engage clients, I would not do the work for him. Builder claimed that no one bought a house based on how many wires were in the wall. I still think he's a jerk for shorting his clients like that, but what can you do. I still think about all the limitations that the H.O.s will have to live with, but none of them have called me to talk about options, and I know if they contacted the builder he would have given them my number. Oh well...

Dont be stupid! The downstairs is still open which means drywall is in progress which means its not that hard to remove a few pieces of drywall and do the right thing. Leave the Cat5 in place and add at least 1 coax per location. Anything less is retarded.
