Samsung has a android tablet already out. verizon has had it for sale for a while now.

Several other less known companies have very cheap android tablets too.

I keep hearing this argument. It made sense in 1998, but it doesn't make any sense now. Yes, Apple has a much smaller market share, but they have a reputation for being ultra secure (even if they are not). Seems like the fastest way to get your 1337 badge as a hacker would be to make Apple have a press conference about your security breach.

Besides, there was only one Gibson, and that got hacked.

Makes perfect sense. The hackers who are in it for the money don't want to be known, can you name any of the big five in the exploitation community (Windows)? Why would a criminal want to advertise themselves, that makes no sense to me.

The hackers that do want to get known, are known. The Dev-team. The jailbreakers. The ones who allow us (some of us) to use our phones the way we want to. They have a website and everything. They have been on CNN and in the computerworld are somewhat famous. Other people have hacked OSX in all sorts of ways, luckily they are not evil-doers, but do gooders who reported the bug to Apple. One guys name is Charlie Miller, others remain anonymous. Apple fixes some bugs and some have been left open for lengths of time. Some get shot down by Apple. They're out there. And especially with Apples connection to the open source community and its compilation of technologies. It's a wonderful and complex operating system that in many ways is being held back by Apple itself, but to think its untouchable is just plain ignorant and its downright scarey that a good amount of Apple users think that it is such. Malware does exist in simpler forms on the Mac. Facebook is quickly becoming a targeted playground. The "teenie booper" trojan that is starting to plant roots in Facebook videos (banana, boonaner). People need to realize that you can't just click on whatever you want with no worries, no matter what platform you use. It's just like boxing, no matter how tough you think you are, theres always somebody tougher.

The samsung is very nice. The only problem I see with it is it is only available from verizon (which means requires another data plan) and the 7" tablet costs the same as the 3G iPad. The 7" size is great. Maybe a easier to use size than the full size iPad. But I have trouble with a smaller size costing as much as a larger panel.

Granted, the cheap ones out there probably arent so great. But I do know one individual that loves his arcos android tablet.

Imo the problem is that the android for 'pads' hasn't been released yet, so it's not comparable to the iPad just yet.

Apple's really not that secure, it just doesn't make sense for the hacker elite to go after such a small market,

I can't remember the exact numbers but I read somewhere yesterday that Apple Sold around 14 MILLION Iphones and 14 Million iPads plus something like 8-10 million computers in the 4th quater of 2010 ALONE.

That's not a small market IMO. Even if the did half that the rest of the year, that's still around 50 million iphones, 50 million ipads and 40 million computers. Small market?

Small market indeed. We're not talking about the number of RTI's someone on this site programmed. We're talking global sales of a product line that is a household staple. We're talking in RELATIVE terms. And your numbers are WAY off. Apple set record numbers in the 4th quarter, but only sold about half (7.3 million iPads) of the numbers you listed in the 4th quarter. An impressive number indeed and iPads accounted for .3 percent of all internet traffic, another impressive number, but one still falling short to your numbers. They also sold over 16 million iphones, which bests your number, but we are talking computers here and Apple only sold 4.1 million of those. I say only because were speaking in relative terms again and Microsoft (as of Oct 1 2010) sold 240 MILLION Windows 7 licenses. Through the holidays that number trumped 300 MILLION. Small market- most certainly. 4.1 million is a lot, but when you compare it to a number hovering close to 400 million, its a zit.

You want to put this in everyday terms? Lets use a URC/Crestron comparison. Since I took a bow from this industry I've had calls to do several dozen RTI/URC jobs. I've had calls to do about 3 Crestron systems. The Crestron systems are obviously higher dollar but they are lesser in number, Now, lets say I'm a hacker and I want to pool as much personal data as possible. Do I spend months writing code to go after the Crestron market (Apple) which only accounts for a sliver of households or do I take the lower paying, mass market jobs (Windows). The potential is what I'm (as a hacker) after. Numbers always look big, especially profit margins, which is a hilltop on which Apple reigns supreme, but numbers mean nothing unless they are used in relative terms, which is a Mountain that our buddies in Redmond control. Sure Apple shipped a record amount of Macs, but that record number is a couple days sales in the Windows world and as someone looking to exploit as many people as possible, not a good looking number. In the context of this thread and of which we speak, an OS, a fancy Aluminum bezel behind which I type, fancy devices that I can sync through tightly regulated and patrolled software programs--they don't matter. In this context assaulting the masses, the most people is what matters and, I'm sorry to say and mean no insult to the fanboi's, but its a context that Apple just falls short in. And before you arm the guards- I am an Apple user, a looooong time one at that, but you have to look at this from a perspective that doesn't involve a weird love for a brand, an inanimate object, this is about corrupting the masses and making money and the odds there lie in going after the Windows world because worldwide, thats where the money is. Time is money and resources are limited and when your looking to exploit everyone, you don't turn to a platform that has very little penetration in the majority of the world.
