I don't deal with DirecTV too much. In fact its been over a year since I have had a customer who subscribed to them. I have one that is from the UK that would like to switch so he can get his soccer in HD that is not offered through Cablevision. He asked about their DVR's,whether they use a whole house DVR like Uverse or do they have separate DVR's at each location. I am not sure. When I last worked with them they did not use a whole house DVR but remember hearing something about them possible using such a system. What are they currently using?

You can do it either way.

The answer is they do both. You can have multiple DVR units, giving you pause, rewind, and forward at each location. And they have a whole house DVR option that networks your DVRs. With this you can watch something recorded on any DVR on any other DVR or HD receiver.

Do these run over standard coax or would a ethernet have to be run to each location?

It works over standard coax. And for the ethernet connection, DTV has a piece that injects the network onto the coax to send it to each receiver too. It puts the DTV boxes on their own subnet so to reduce problems with other traffic

Nice. So no rewiring will be required. That was my biggest concern as it would take quite a few access holes to do so.

DirecTV's MRV works pretty well. Also there's DirecTV2PC, a computer program, that allows you to access any DVR on the network and view recorded programs. Free download from DirecTV. Requires a decent computer, but my little Dell ZinoHD with 512MB graphics card handles it just fine.

One limit of the MRV that you should be aware of. A DVR can only stream to ONE device at a time. If you have 2 shows you want to watch from DVR #1 and you want to watch them in 2 locations OTHER THAN physically sitting there watching DVR#1, it won't work. Only one device will be able to stream from that DVR at a time.

If your using Xantech Drag Drop software version 2.3.36.0 it has the command strings for SAT-0 thru SAT-9. Add it to each button prior to the buttons original command. Example for Receiver 2

Exisiting PLAY button

Marco would be :
SAT-2
PLAY

Repeat on all buttons

I believe the IR codes are the same for all the receivers when you have mutiple units. What sets them apart is the code in front of the original code that directs it to the correct receiver. Hope that make sense.

I dont think there is differant IR for all the commands. That would be 9 full sets of remote commands.

Hope that helps.....
