looked at a project where all they have is an M&S intercom, they want to add an iPod which I know I can do, but also want to add some deck speakers.

is there any reason i can't hijack the speaker leads which are very low power and run them into a small amp like the Sherbourn in wall.

the house is a 100 year old row home which has been recently remodeled. I introduced the idea of Sonos, but they are of the opinion that they have this big ugly thing in the wall that they want to try to make it work.

There's no reason you can't but lots of reason not to.

You can probably show them that the sound they would get from the ugly thing in the wall is as ugly as the thing in the wall, and they should let you get them something better.

All you'll have to do to get them to go for something better is to bring an amp and some good speakers and tap into the speaker wires as you plan. Chances are there's hum that nobody can hear on the crap speakers the "system" now has, but which will make a good system sound intolerable.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'm working on one right now that got chewed up in a remodel and has been running exactly like you are asking for years. There is not a problem with it other than a few chopped wires which were never put back.

Just use a pair of M&S speakers with a volume control on the patio, and line into the "big ugly wall unit" with your iPod dock.

They'll be happy, you'll make money.

Trying to "over sell" people doesn't always work out. They're obviously satisfied with the lousy sound quality from that M&S and you're telling them that it's no good?

Think about that....

Hijack away. No problem. If the amp doesn't take speaker level input but has RCA I have used a PAC SNI-35 (I think it is the number for the high power speaker level to RCA) in a situation like this before.
