I recently did my first JVC 3D projector. After getting my ass handed to me troubleshooting HDMI issues, I thought I was in the home stretch. In the process of testing everything one last time, I noticed the integra receiver's volume control was very sluggish and intermittent.

Since I was using an MX900 with mrf260 I assumed there was some kind RF interference. I spent additional time searching for different codes sets and trying to learn the volume commands, puzzled as usually volume is a no-brainer. The issue seemed to come and go and was driving me crazy and nothing seemed to help. Finally, I thought about the projectors 3D emitter. Sure enough, when a 3D movie wasn't playing, the integra's volume worked normally. When on, it would worked in fits and starts. An ir emitter cover solved the issue.

Thanks for the heads up!

How did the JVC 3D projector look? Front projection is really the only place for 3D.

Another guys at our shop did our first 3D projector, a Sony.  The client had an existing IR system which we replaced.  He said that before he powered down the IR system, the receiver feedback LED would go crazy when 3D was turned on.

This 3D thing may be opening up a whole new can of problems for us integrators.....

What kind of HDMI issues did you have? What was the solution?

I'm interested because I wanted to upgrade from my Panasonic PT-AE700U to something 3D.

Can the JVC turn 3D on when you have a 2D source, the way Samsung and Sony TVs can, essentially simulating 3D?

Thank you,

One solution is to cover up the IR sensors, if they catch any IR from the 3D emitter. I'm sure many of us have player the black electrical tape game at least once. It's not the most elegant solution, but it should work.

I've done the JVC DLA-RS60 and it's great. The picture is very clear and the 3D is as good or better than in the theater. I didn't have the IR issues because the rack is in a closet and I use RS-232 for everything possible.

My only complaint is that the 3D glasses are too big for people not wearing corrective glasses. There's too much gap between your face and the lens which allows light in. The light reflections make the lens appear dirty, but you quickly stop noticing it and when looking beyond the lens and at the screen. 3D is new and there will be many improvements in the future. Not making IR 3D glasses universal was a huge mistake.

I'm not aware of a forced 3D mode feature on the JVC.

My receiver was Marantz SR7005. It also sounds great, I'm not sure what others are talking about when they say it's worse than the SRx004 or earlier series.

I understand the 3D IR emitter can be placed at the PJ and reflect off of the screen or placed at the front of the room and face the viewers. Any pros/cons on placement?

The folks at JVC at CES said to just put it at the projector and you are fine.

If you put it at the projector it might make IR flooding problems worse for some installs. Time to start locking all equipment away behind solid doors and selling some cabinet cooling solutions.
Wireless speakers? Of course Sir. Choose the colour and size you like. As you don't seem to think sound quality is important, I will not plug them in.

I thought that was 10 years ago. :)

But even the 'little' systems will require it now.

Yes. It used to be that people wanted their equipment to show, but IR and other systems made it possible to be stylish and hide the equipment, and yeah, that was ten years ago. But this makes it mandatory. That's collateral wallet damage from converting to 3D.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

What kind of HDMI issues did you have? What was the solution?

The system was:
Higher end integra (can't remember the model number)
Apple TV
Xbox
Wii
Motorola Comcast cable box
HD Tivo
Sony entry level Bluray
JVC DLAX9 3d projector with emitter sitting on the projector I believe
(works great)
I did this job as a sub for a different company. They ran two 12 meter forest (I believe) Audioquest HDMI cables.

Round 1:
With all the sources routed into the integra and then to the JVC, I can get Blu-ray to pass through, the Wii, and Apple TV. Everything is HDMI with the exception of the Wii of course.

The Tivo and the Comcast box refuse to pass through to the projector. Strangely, they will pass when outputing standard def video.

The Tivo "just waiting" screen shows up at reboot since its standard def but disappears when it clicks into 1080i.

The comcast box shows standard def channels at 480 but picture disappears if you go HD - 720 or 1080.
Both work fine directly to the projector.

WTF?

After screwing around with it, I finally noticed a "monitor out" button on the front of the integra. This integra has two HDMI outs. It can be set to output one, the other, or both. Silly me, I had it set to output one! I set it to both (which makes no sense since I was using only one output) and magically it all starts to work.

Round 2

Despite the fact that the 3D passed OK through the integra initially, the next day it refused to do so. After updating everything including the integra and messing around with it, I finally used the secondary HDMI cable to the projector dedicated to the Blu-ray and all finally worked.

I suppose a better blu-ray player may have improved the odds of successfully passing throught the integra.
