Today is the day!

As of 12:00 AM when the ball drops, manufacturers are no longer allowed to introduce new Blu-ray players with component video outputs capable of HD output; they must limit those outputs to SD (480i or 576i). Existing models may continue to be sold until the end of 2013.

As of 12:00 AM when the ball drops, the producers of Blu-ray disks will be able to include an "Image Constraint Token" with any Blu-ray disk which will disable HD over component video, limiting it to a 480i/576i resolution - even though your player is perfectly capable, and bought well before the cut-off date.

Get ready for the phone to ring!

Is this going to be like 1999 with everyone sitting around to see if their BDP stops working at midnight?

Is anyone aware of any comercially produced movie that sets the image constraint token?

I have not found one yet. My Blu-Ray ripping software has a place to tell me, but I've yet to see one.

Because it is not allowed until midnight tonight. You will begin to see this on newly released movies.

I have only heard of two titles which set this by accident, coming out of Germany (Resident Evil 1 and 2). Both were in violation of AACS rules as it requires clear notice to the consumer on the packaging.

I wonder will this mark the beginning of the end for BluRay?

Will there be all sorts of hacks to get around this stupidity?

Will the MPAA and their ilk ever really understand?

Will this give us world peace?

2011 will at the very least be a year for increased sales at HDFury. Maybe a class action lawsuit opportunity for some bottom feeder attorneys regarding the lack of ICT notification on the BR discs.

Have a profitable year.

Cheers,

I though ICT was for 2012, and only soft (i.e. legally it could be used before but everyone agreed to wait)

Should we expect any constraints on cable and/or sat receivers?

So does that mean the HD fury is "illegal" or only products that produce the picture such as a blu-ray player.

We are not lawyers so the term "illegal" should not be used one way or the other :). HDCP requires a license and that license stipulates you can't take that video and put it out in the clear. So the issue is that HDFury can get its keys revoked someday, when someone plugs a new source into it. That is your risk. Not going to jail :).
