So I've been called in to clean up another disaster. The house has 12 TV's and 12 sources. Sources are:

7 x Echostar (Bell) HD boxes
4 x Pace HD cable boxes
1 x Sony 400 DVD changer

Original guys are using Key Digital KD-MSW8X4PRO's for video switching. Each one is 8 inputs with 4 outputs all component.

For above system, how many of the Key Digital pieces would you have used???

If you want all 12 TVs all different zones you would need 3 units. (3 units x 4 outputs = 12 outputs.) Also be sure to control them w/ RS232 or you'll kill yourself.

Thats what I expected to find but I just pulled out 10 of them!!! With every single input and out connected and only 12 TV's! Not mention all being controlled by IR.

10!! WTF. did they use enough outputs for every jack in the house, even unused ones?
I love supporting product that supports me!

Hell yeah that's a real video system! You could have a closed circuit cable or satellite system with 80 channels of your choice. Each channel gets it's own box and input on the Fat Boys. Old School style.

You should still only have 8 inputs.

True. Bummer. I've been using the products as a single config and I'm starting to wonder if HD modulation is the more cost effective way to go these days. Holy Guacamole that's a $25,000 Fat Boy configuration you're looking at.

Only 12 TV's hooked up. The dumbest thing I've ever seen not to mention a total waste.

Key Digital might not have been the correct choice for this job. However, their 8x4 was bundled together to get 12 outputs but if you needed all 12 inputs at all 12 displays you'd have to play games and cascade inputs into a number of switches and output as a source into each switch feeding a display. Confusing in English? Try diagramming it or worse imagine programming

I'm too tired to work out the math exactly but it would require 3 units with 4 inputs feeding its 4 outputs into the 3 units feeding the displays. That is at least 6 units and I may not have worked out the permutations correctly. Sure a 16x16 from Autopatch, Kramer, Extron and so on would have simplified everything by many powers of 10. What happens if you ordered a 16 x16 from Key Digital and this is what they sent?

As Alan said there is a way to configure these units in order to increase the inputs but looking at the schematic for it makes my brain hurt. According to the Key Digital catalog their 16 x 12 configuration requires 6 of the 8x4 Fatboys. 10 of the units will yield you a 16x20 configuration. For what it's worth those units only go for about $300 on ebay.

Stupid thing is after speaking with the homeowner, there's never more than 4 TV's one at any one given time so 8 sources are more than enough. I have no idea what original installer was thinking but after spending 3 days at the job it's very clear this was WAY over his head.
