So I'm trying to figure out an inexpensive gas friendly vehicle to use for service calls and smaller install jobs. I've been looking at all kinds of stuff but haven't been able to narrow it down. It would be ideal to be able to fit in the small garages that are in DC. So I've been looking at the Chevy HHR, Scion xB, Ford Flex($$$), or smaller crossover SUV. Anybody have a smaller vehicle to use like this? I have that 6" ladder that goes down to barely more then 4' and it fits into almost any car. I wouldn't need to have all the tools that I have in my van but I would need to pack an essentials.

Someone please help me before I go crazy comparing different vehicles!!

I've been seeing more and more of these recently, and they are very in-expensive.

I have no experience with them personally.

I have a Honda Element. VERY happy with it.

Rear seats are completely flexible.
AWD goes like a tank in the snow.
Can fit up to a 50" panel in the back (front to back).
Odd enough to stand out in the crowd, but not like a sore thumb.

I use a Pontiac Vibe but a Toyota Matrix is the same. Hard to beat 36mpg and a Toyota engine. The front passenger seat folds flat allowing long ladders and such to fit. The entire back seat folds down to make a flat surface with nothing to lift over to put stuff in. It also has not carpet in the back. I use a moving blanket to keep stuff from skidding. It fits all but the largest TVs also. We use a big E-250 for that.

HHR is nice. Astro allwheel drive is my favorite! Ford flex would be good. Use my suburban love it but sucks on gas. Jeep patriot is ok. Or an H3. Just get what u like

+1 for the transit connect. I was up at "american van" two weeks ago getting something for my truck and they had just finished upfitting a transit connect and showed me it. The thing was so versatile and what they did with all the space was pretty cool. Could even see doing small-medium small jobs in it. (im fortunate to have american van an hour away from me =) awesome stuff)

if you want to go bigger but not too big +1 on the Astrovans you pick them up used in pretty good condition for a relatively good price!

Mini Cooper extended Clubman with a 40 ft ladder permanently welded to the top. That, and your logo/phone/website will certainly generate calls.

If you are concerned about the ladder protruding each end, then saw sections and hinge them, giving the appearance that....well, use your imagination.

I have a Ford Escape Hybrid. I get 31mpg without even trying to drive "smarter". If I make conscious attempts to drive conservatively, I can push 40-45. It holds a ton of stuff with the rear seats folded down flat. Even a nice roof rack I can attach smaller ladders on.

I know it's more expensive than most of those options, but I got a good deal on a used one, 2008.

We have a ford transit and love it. Though the hhr "panel" looks really great!
Label the side and you have a very pro looking vehicle.

Element / scion is nice but it looks more like a hobbyist vehicle then a pro.

Hhr panel is Meant for exactly that.
