So after finishing an install last week, I remembered I had left the living room fan on. I simply turned off the fan while watching the tv turn pink, then flicker, then go black, then come back on. This happens to be a master electricians home in which he wired for all of the audio himself. claims the fab is on a seperate circuit. The weirdest thing is; any fan in the 2 story house will cause this, but not any of the light switches next to the fan.

I got a call 2 weeks ago from an electrician with the same problem.

what causes this!

Is there a solution?

OK, you left the fan on.

I simply turned off the fan while watching the tv turn pink, then flicker, then go black, then come back on.

You turned off the fan while the TV was doing all this? What was the result after turning the fan off? Did the TV go back on to normal? What brand TV is it? Is it hooked up to a quality surge protector/power conditioner?

He wired the audio himself, but did he wire the electricity himself?

Alot of people are having problems with HDMI baluns and motor loads in houses. I believe one of the fixes was to ground the balun or something like that..

Is this just a statement of fact, or are you pointing out that he should have turned it off?

You have correctly interpreted what he wrote. I think he meant something different, perhaps:

When I turned the fan, the TV turned pink, then flickered, then went black, then came back on,

claims the fab is on a separate circuit.

I'm guessing that the fab is in the laundry room near the bleach.

the weirdest thing is; any fan in the 2 story house will cause this, but not any of the light switches next to the fan.

It's not weird: every fan switch that just turns off lights gives you no problem, and every light switch that turns off a motor gives you this problem. In other words, don't get hung up on the location or proximity of the switches; instead notice that they all have something in common: switching motors or not switching motors.

I got a call 2 weeks ago from an electrician with the same problem.

what causes this!

Electricians, apparently? (hey, ONE of us had to use a question mark!)
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

One possible cause. If the fan is on a speed control the motor speed is altered by switching a series of AC capacitors into the motor drive. These can and do cause weird harmonics on the power line.

It is possible that that the HDMI balun or the set itself is getting
"noise" from the fan control.

The T.V. is a Vizio. The Customer, also a master electrician, wired for both the low voltage and high voltage in his home. He had recessed his tv above the fireplace. I was called in to finish the install. He had damaged the hdmi cable he ran by trying to take down his tv. ripped the end right off of it. I installed a quality surge suppressor/ condition for the tv. Luckily he had a cat 5 cable ran as well. I used the cat 5 and the damaged hdmi cable to run into a hdmi extender. I spliced the hdmi into cat 5 jumpers on both ends. When leaving the job I turned the fan off.
The tv flickers and goes to a black screen when you turn off or on the fan. when turning the bedroom fan on, the screen turns pink. eventually the tv will go back to functioning fine on its own. The customer claims the bedroom fan and the great room fan is on a seperate circuit.

I then washed my clothes in fab, ate a cookie and got out of there!

First, I think this is pretty ironic happening in an Electricians house. I can't even count how many electricians have pointed fingers at me during electric issues, when in fact, their wiring or shoddy parts were the issue.

I really have not heard of splicing "cat5 ends" onto a cut HDMI, I guess it might work, but I have never tried.

Have you plugged the TV into a different outlet in the house?

What other components are in the loop (cable boxes, receivers)?

Have you tried to plug any of the other equipment into other outlets in the house?

Are there any TV's in the house that ARE working normally? Can you try to plug in the malfunctioning TV into the working TV's outlet with a long extension cord?

I won't claim to know anything about high voltage & circuits, cause I really dont, I just know that when I have had power issues before, I have always tried to eliminate the problem area/devices first, rather than try to find the problem.

On one of my box trucks, I keep a heavy duty power inverter (massive and heavy) so that we can run our drills on jobsites that do not yet have power, and on several occasions, it has helped me eliminate bad electrical wiring/components by plugging in devices to that power supply.

If all else fails, do as Stamp suggested and switch it to Component.

Good luck, I hope you find the issue.

Yeah, as already said dump the hdmi balun and use a component balun.

I have had alot of problems with Vizios and HDMI. Dump the HDMI and go component. You will be saving yourself and the "master" electrician alot of headaches.

I would never try the Vizio HDMI combo (or any combo that starts with Vizio), however, the many comments here and in other threads that suggest to "just switch to component" bother me.

That doesnt solve the problem. It simply states an obvious answer that 90% of know. The big problem being, its really not an answer at all. Component is NOT equalt to HDMI. It can not deliver the same image.

The biggest issue here is either the bad idea to splice the HDMI or faulty electrical. I dont remember if the pink snow screen is an EDID issue or not but there are some built in troubleshooting options available. It might be something as simple as a 5v issue were a restorer would work. We havent even asked him what sources, what balun, etc.

Find a good resource like Ethereal or Cap Sales and pick their brain. Learn something from this. We wont be able to run from HDMI forever.

In the past I have been the biggest HDMI detractor but lately (thanks to Brent and Jeff) I do believe the image is superior and the 1080p issue is undeniable.

Two things:
-If he come back and says the only source is a cable box then yeah....component balun it is.

-The client did buy a Vizio so maybe Ethereal restorers and DAD are out of budget at this point.
