A client has a three year old JVC plasma that puts out a green screen when it gets an interlaced signal, whether that comes in on the NTSC input or the composite input. This first showed up when one, then another, TiVo using the NTSC input gave us a solid green screen. A JVC guy estimated repair at $150 - $300 and we'd have to transport it there (only about 30 miles), wait a couple weeks, then go get it again.

Did I mention the client is on a tight budget? He is.

He needed a new A/V receiver, and I thought we could avoid fixing the plas by just using the upconverting feature of a new Yamaha. Then in setting up a new DVD player I found that even an interlaced component signal gave us a green screen.

So now the alternatives are:

fix the dam plasma, which was the right thing to do anyway; we were out to save some bucks; or

get an HD DVR from DirecTV and set its output so even NTSC signals are output with a progressive scan signal.

Does anybody know what the current model DirecTV HD DVR is and whether it FOR SURE can be set up so it outputs only progressive?

Thanks
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

you can definately have it output a certain resolution at all times. choices are 480i/p, 720p, 1080i. you havnt put one of these or a h20 in yet? they operate the same. we almost use directv exclusively. not a dealer for them just spec or suggest them.

But isnt the HD DVR from Direct going to cost as much as the repair? I was thinking they are about a $199 upgrade from the basic equipment

I've seen these choices withthe MOXI box (yeah, I know it's not the same), but there you choose how many different outputs you want it to be able to give you. So you could choose all of these and you'd get whatever came through the box if it was one of them. Just to be sure, I mean I want to choose just ONE of those as the output.

No. The client had two systems sharing a TiVo (not a DirecTV DVR POS) and one plasma was stolen more than a year ago. He's finally getting around to putting things back together and wants the TiVo (not the DirecTV GUI) for his wife, so that's the system we're trying to figure out. Gee, I hope the plasma that got stolen ALSO has a case of green screen!

they operate the same.

Not the same as a TiVo. Close, but retarded. Like saying that AOL operates the same as Internet Explorer.

Us too. That's why I don't know the details of how they work, or the prices. Of course, it seems to be a requirement for installing them that you don't really know how they work, too.

I now hear that I have to think of the price of the HD unit in terms of monthly...I'lbe calling the big D tomorra to find out what the actual price will be.

i meant that the h-20 and hr-20 operate the same as far as resolution settings go.

the hr20 definately does not operate the same as tivo. i have three tivo directv dvr boxes and we just got one hr-20 directv hd dvr. my wife has cursed me ever since. i will say after four or five months we are getting used to it and with all of the firmware and software updates it is getting pretty good. but is or will never be as good and easy to use as a tivo. i was so pissed when directv terminated their relationship with tivo. tivo is king of dvr

My response probably didn't address what you meant because I don't know how either one actually works, so telling me they operate the same is no big whoop.

What a misdirection of ire! My wife listens to me curse the box and DirecTV, the real culprits. You know you can find my comments on their boxes by searching the forums for "piece of crap," right? It's in the thread name, not just in the text.

good and easy to use as a tivo.

I can still sit here and improvise several paragraphs on how it is bad and the TiVo is good. But, unusual for me, I won't.

tivo is king of dvr

Amen. We were murdoched.
