Heard that is about the worst pain one can endure. Best of luck to you on that one.

Aside from being in labor ;)

Glad things got worked out.. Even more glad that I've never had the experience!!

I'm really happy with the niche I've fallen into providing kind of 2nd tier solutions.  Most of the clients I work for can afford anything they want, but just aren't interested in full blown Crestron or AMX systems.  Mmany of them already have (or have had) these systems in other homes and just never saw the value.

This job is a perfect example.  They originally had a bid for $270K for Crestron, but just weren't interested.  It's not that it cost too much, they just didn't want or need all the features.  The architect recommended me and I came in with a solution that only included what they really wanted for less than half the price.

A lot of people don't really care that much about the technology we provide, they want TVs and music in some rooms, lighting control and maybe an intercom system and they want it to be reliable and easy to use but don't really want all the bells and whistles.

If I pursued becoming a Creston dealer, I'd be competing against some strong competition in my market that's well established and I'd also have to staff up to take on even larger jobs (which I don't really want to do).  I enjoy doing what I do now and I think it's a big part of what's made the company successful.

+1.

When you use your design abilities to come up with creative solutions and provide comparable results @ a fraction of the cost by minimizing unneeded expenses, you often can increase profit margin while saving the client money. This doesn't mean using lower end parts, just being more creative with the design and not throwing one solution at every client.

+2 and Amen. I completely agree. I have installed (some projects more successfully than others) many makes and models of control and automation systems and, frankly, can't stomach them any more. Many people here are, I'm sure, great at these systems, but I do not have the patience, or honestly the ability, to provide the support and programming required.

Glad to see Paul is not afraid to provide "2nd tier solutions." This sums up exactly where I want to be as a company. (And when I grow up I want my systems to show the craftsmanship of SB Smarthomes).

Today, I'm hanging with the Stanley Cup at a client/neighbors. Lots of good food and cold beverages.

Just in time for CEDIA?  Hmmmmm.

Do you regularly dump your women just before Valentines Day?

Is this the woman who wanted you to buy a small island in Brazil? Or do you keep a stable of women?

Hope you're not too broke up about it, because I'll still bust your balls about it. :)

Latin, Carribean, alot of southern European women have a lot of great qualities, emotional stablity typically isn't one of them.  But the men are the same way.  (i'm one of them) It's something in our genes.

That's why I married a English girl.  Dinner sucks for awhile, but they can take a cooking class.  You can't stop crazy.

True... she had a lot of great qualities + one BAD one... She could fly off the handle for the smallest thing--- or due to language barriers, sometimes misunderstand or take something the wrong way, and go BRASILIAN BALLISTIC!!!! The good thing was the next day it was like nothing happened.

A friend at work went out with us one night and I said... Yeah she can be kind of a firecracker--- my friend said no Stanley, she's thermo-nuclear!

Bruce, when I read your posts about woman trouble, I picture that character Gloria from the TV show Modern Family. Close?

Spent the weekend at a cottage for a friends bachelor party... Great time drinking at the cottage and the bars. Only down side is I now have a garage full of empties to return (at least it will cover some cost of the weekend).
