No theater. The whole system is a CP2E, Pad8, FM Tuner, Dishnetwork Box, Escient music server, 6 zones of audio and 2 TPS-2000L.

I feel bad charging for cleaning this up. I tried to get them to upgrade and start over, but no go.

As far as age, I couldn't say for sure. 4 or 5 years at least.

In the middle of the tear down I found a befuddling tidbit. At the bottom of the crappy rack, I found this holding up the nuvo system

Notice that only the power and LAN are connected to the escient.

We counted yesterday and realized that one made for a total of 4 escients they own. 1 that was used just to control a Sony changer, 1 in their FL home, 1 that was for music but we had to send in to get repaired and is sitting in our shop (they havent been in a hurry to reload discs), and then the 1 I found being used as a base in the stack of equipment.

Btw, did anyone know you could do this with a digital audio signal?

Yes...but try not to if at all possible. Kind of like Cat5 for speaker wire.

Looking at the speaker wire on this job, I think cat5 would have been an upgrade

Somewhere I have a picture of a take-over job where the previous installer used stripped coax (sheild and copper) to extend IR to the TV. That one took the cake for me.

I've done it before lol. I had to use RG6 for IR and the f to 1/8" part didn't show up in time so I stripped soldered heat shrinked my way into the trunk slammer hall of fame!

i've got you all beat.

We had an old Vaux matrix switcher that we had to change to RS232 control because the IR codes would not work.  it had a 25 pin connector for rs232 control.  I told the person, who shall remain nameless, to pick one of these up before coming to the job, and he forgot about it.  So in order to make it work I had to tin the ends of a multiconductor cable and jam them directly into the back of the unit, then hot glue everything into place so it wouldn't fall out.

now where is my trophy?

That's pretty bad. Not nearly as cool but I once did not have a URC RS-232 cable (you know the 4 conductor TRRS 3.5mm kind) so I was able to cannibilize a DLO iPod dock 3.5mm cable that happened to have the same TRRS format and pin it out to a DB9 for controlling a Nuvo Simplese.
The less I say, the smarter I will appear
