Went to look at why an older syxtem was no longer working after the THREE different DTV installers were on the job.

Here's what they left behind:

Wiring in the cabinet all undone (had been bundled up with velcro) HDMI run up over the mantle, Power cord run up over the mantle, coax entended out the front of the cabinet, and no connection to the AVR.

That's a JVC HD'ila (720k/1080i input) so a simple re-connection to the Component video cables would have made sense, and had the system up and running.

But noooooo! Due to being ignorant, they made the mess, and then told client they HAD to run the HDMI cable or nothing would work.

Then they left, and nothing worked....

It's working out well for me though. The client would like to upgrade things.

I have had my fair share of these DirecTV & Cable guy "upgrades". The worst project is one we did about 8 years ago. EVERY time i go there the rack is torn apart. More time is spent cleaning up their mess. There is a drop ceiling with wire duct going up the back wall and down the side wall to the racks. Move one ceiling tile and remove two wire duct caps and you can run anything you want between the two points. They remove all this stuff then run their cable from the back wall straight into the rack leaving the back door open. I have probably corrected this exact scenario 10 times in 8 years. Im half tempted to lock the racks and take the keys with me but i know that i will come back and find a hole drilled in the door.

Nice. Did your SEO play a role? Or good old fashioned lead?

Believe it or not.  ServiceMagic.

I bid this job about 8 months ago, and never heard back from them.  Called me on Monday, and said "Hey, we're ready to move in the building in 3 weeks, can you get it done?"

What the hell are you doing in San Diego?  Damn you.  You didn't even invite me.  Must be nice to be able to take vacations.

It's been nearly 70 degrees everyday lately, so you might as well stay out there.

And I've told you before, I'm diong you a favor by taking these jobs, if I didn't take them, you'd have to deal with these people.  Next thing you know, you've got an ulcer or you have a massive coronary while you're in someone's attic.  Do you really want that?  No. You don't.

I'm trying to help you.

You stick with the easy to deal with people with tons of money, I'll pick up the crazy people who don't want to pay.

Finally got a Gefen digital-to-analog converter so I can play AppleTV in zone 2...which is my apartment's balcony, so I can drown out the noisy inconsiderate jerks who live above me.

Finished a large doctors office today. Two of us hung 20 Dell monitors on Snap articulating mounts (togglers in metal studs), hung 20 Dell computers on wall/desk mounts, drilled holes in desks to access network and power jacks, interfaced mouse and keyboard, hooked to network, tested, etc.

Definitely in a groove, especially for a Saturday. Very happy at our speed and progress.

This commercial stuff is ok...

Tearing my hair out trying to get the damn remote access for this digital loggers piece to work. I have the DNS confirmed and working, ports forwarded, afaik everything is right, but it doesn't work.

Did however pick up a DSC security panel and started programming with Crestron & Prodigy and basic functions are all working great so far.

It should be something basic,, we have tens that we can access remotely using port forwarding. Did you disable the following checkbox in setup: "Same subnet access only"?

Friday I finished up the install at the property with all the glass art (without breaking anything).

This was a small upgrade job.
  1. Replace 50" RPTV and modify cabinet for 46" LED
  2. Remove all the old electronics except for Adcom & Sonance amps powering indoor/outdoor speakers through volume controls.
  3. Replace old Niles Intellitouch with MX-980/MRF-350
  4. Denon 2312CI, Denon 5-Disc Changer, AppleTV, Blu-ray, APC, 12v trigger & relays used to control exhaust fans and motorized speakers.
  5. Middle Atlantic ASR slide out and rotating shelving (no room for a rack)

Heres a few photos from the phone:
