Snap, thanks for the comment. That is an awesome studio (and a lot more sophisticated than my little project). I noticed your C4 gear. I have spoken to my rep a few times, but am unsure if I want to get involved. If you don't mind, please email me at [email protected] with your C4 experiences. Thanks, Mike

At least all of these service calls are allowing me to photograph some projects I never shot. Mike, all your photos are always amazing. What camera are you using?

Are those RPG panels on the ceiling? What do you use to measure or EQ the room? We used to use "TEF" analysis at this place I worked at (hey! that was when I worked with Glackowitz's boss, and Mr. Brown!)... Anyway, cool. Anybody ever use Mackie speakers in Theaters?

I used to subscribe to one of the Pro-Audio industry mags... A lot of the product used in the Pro field could easily be incorporated into a lot of what we do. There were always very good articles about running sound contracting businesses, and sales, proposal and bidding info.
Theirs is a much older, more experienced field than ours, and they have a wealth of experience, although we are catching up to them.
I see more and more cross-pollination between the Pro Sound world, and the CI-Residential world.
It's always cool though, to see acoustically treated rooms, with elaborate EQ set-ups and all that stuff.

Anybody ever use Mackie speakers in Theaters? I've done a couple for portable large venue 'conference' meetings before...though most of the time its being done as a rental system...5 powered PA speakers, a surround sound receiver for processing, and a 5 RCA-XLR cables. In addition to a large screen and bright projector. It can be good money if you already own the equipment, but if you need to rent it for the client then the money isnt great. I am actually doing a set up at the end of the month down in Portland for a Non-profit I volunteer for, unfortunately that wont be a money maker but its a good organization.

It's always cool though, to see acoustically treated rooms, with elaborate EQ set-ups and all that stuff. I am a former CI guy who is now in the pro-audio world. I am a recording engineer but also in charge of the upkeep and updating of our rooms. There really is a lot of similarities between the two. Though, one of the main differences I find is the average CI consumers lack of interest in room acoustics. To me this is just as, if not more important than speaker selection. If a room is gonna muddy up the sound, why bother with the best speakers? But it's not sexy to the paying customer so they have a hard time spending the proper money. For a studio, this is the very first item on the agenda. On a side note, I just spec'd and oversaw the installation of 3 of these in our New York studio: Believe it or not, that thing is just a giant mouse for a rack full of gear over in another room. The only wires going to it are a power cable and some cat 5's.

I send the shots to a Photoshop friend who adds the images on the TVs and then touches up glare, color balance, exposure, etc. The lens is the best investment I've made for shooting interiors.

Anybody ever use Mackie speakers in Theaters? The Mackie HR824's are regarded in the pro audio industry as some of the best studio monitors out there. They sound brilliant and are extremely accurate. For in home music I'd bet they would sound great, but I'd be a bit concerned using them for constant high-level home theater use though. They were not really designed to deal with lots of explosions and other harsh sounds on a day in, day out basis. So I'd say it depends on the usage. One miss-conception about recording is about sound level. We actually do most of our work at low volume. Near-field monitors like the Mackie's are usually not turned up very loud. Your ears "lie" to you at louder volumes. When we need to crank it, we fire up the big "client" speakers that are usually big monsters with 12 or 15 inch woofers that are really only used to make the guys in suits feel better about the money they are spending.

Ok, I'm gonna go out on a limb here an ask 2 questions. 1 which is potentially obnoxious and you can, if you wish, tell me to go jump. 1) What's the funky technicolour keyboard for? I'm guessing grouped functions or macros??? and 2) How much does something like that set one back? A rough figure or comparison to another product is enough...

52" LG Opus with Boston E40 Speakers, Denon Equpiment, etc. 42" LG Opus 60" LG Plasma, Boston E40 Speakers, Denon equipment, etc. 22" LG's with Integra Distributed Audio. 92" Screen, Sony PJ, Speakers were put in by another company, IMO, they were too high and it should have been an acoustically transparent screen and covered the center. But this is what you get when you clean up other peoples work.

They are editing commands. Punch through, loop, and a whole host of other commands. The industry standard for digital recording is pro-tools. How ever many of the "big name" engineers will only mix on an analog console. 2) How much does something like that set one back? A rough figure or comparison to another product is enough... The one that was in the studio "B" that my wife sang in was about 98K for the desk. I am guessing that the one in this picture is much more. But any really good desk is going to run you 6 figures easy. I like the LG house. Very nice set up yall!

They are editing commands. Correct. That is a standard keyboard that also has keyboard shortcuts labelled right on the keys in addition to the leters. The colors group them by command type - like editing commands (copy, paste, etc.) or playback commands (play, loop, etc.) But any really good desk is going to run you 6 figures easy. That is the Digidesign ICON D-Control ES and will set you back anywhere from $80k to $140k or more depending in the bells and whistles.

Serviced this job on Friday. Installed last year. Pictured is a 70 inch DLP in the family room and a TPS2000 located at the front door. Total job included music, theater, lighting, HVAC, CCTV, etc. Still working on the engraving on the TPS. Shown is the original (temporary) engraving. It works, but the spacing needs to be better with better graphics, etc.
