Working on a retro and the existing system is a Russound ABus system. We want to replace this with a Crestron Adagio system. Problem is, the jokers who originally wired the system did not pull a 14/4 from the HR location to the keypads, just a CAT5 (then wired 16/2 out to the speakers). Running wire in this house is going to be very difficult.

So I am looking for a small amplifier that I could put inside the wall using two of the twisted pairs as preamp signal, leaving the other two pair for the APAD. I know this isn't ideal, but does anyone know of such an amp? Or do you have other suggestions?

Thanks gents.

Colorado VNet have an elegant in-wall audio solution that matches this wiring schema.

Not really, the Vibe is an IP based distribution system just like NetStreams. The OP is looking for an amp that will be using the cat-5 as a line level signal, not an audio over IP system.

Just thought of a few problems with the inwall amp idea. I don't have enough conductors for the power, audio, and APAD connections. Also, every amp I've found needs local control. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

you could power it over the same 24v as the cresnet... recommend using 2 conductors for power, 2 for ground, and 1 pair for cresnet Y/Z data... leaving you 1 pair left over for mono audio (or stereo if you want to common the data ground with audio ground... not sure i would go that route).

probably can "stick" it on the back of the APAD even.

How about a Russound ABus system? Along with a real quote for doing something better that involves adding wires. It totally sucks, but that's what the other guys stuck the homeowner with. Even if it was the previous homeowner.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

before going to far, check out the number of line level outs on the AES. You are limited. Also the Expanders AAE don't have line out.

Stanley, do you install a lot of the SI amps? I have one and I recommend them to friends all the time, but I haven't brought myself to install one on a job yet. Have you had good luck with them holding up and whatnot? (Obviously with efficient speakers at relatively low volume levels)

Has anyone else come across a basic stand alone in-wall amplifier with line level inputs on the front?

I thought I remembered seeing one at Cedia a couple years ago but I can't remember what brand it was....

Wow

That's a cool little amp.

Unfortunately it's been discontinued!

Any other suggestions?

no way, they disco'd this? It was a fantastic item.

I think I already mentioned this earlier in this thread, but the Nuvo LSA 40 is a FANTASTIC item. Very small, runs cool and sounds great.
