I always hated the office politics aspect of work. Started
at a small (4 employees) company and endeed up running
the sevice dept while it grew to 60. Just did my job
and made sure my dept was running as good as possible.
Watched the new sales managers come in and wear the brown
lipstick. They were spending half their time in the bosses
office telling him what a great job they were doing.
Yep, old story. I HATE office politics too... This one place I worked for had high potential, it was run by a woman who hired a bunch of women to help run the place... Talk about POLITICS!!! Oh man that was a nightmare, spelled G.O.S.S.I.P.
I was a great guy there until one day I had to call one of the girls on her screw-up's ... from that day on I was toast. They would all go out together at lunch, occasionally have a drink or two and gossip their brains out.
TOTAL ESTROGEN ZONE.
But that one incident when I had to call this one woman on her crap, they all ganged up on me.
I was installing, troubleshooting, selling, scheduling, hiring / firing installers & this woman who was basically a receptionist B.S.'d her way into making close to $75K a year, basically by being a good friend and the biggest brown noser you ever saw!!! I made far less than that. It was a funky deal. I bailed when she got a raise, even though I was covering for a lot of her screw ups. It was a joke.
Oh, The boss --- "The Woman Boss" was a G. Bush supporter and a real right -wing conservative politcal junkie--- I had a bumper sticker on my personal vehicle that was a sort of slam against Bush... She called me into her office one day, and very strongly suggested I remove the bumper sticker (which I did)... but ever since that day, I got really really bad vibes from her, when before she really liked me.
Don't talk politics with your boss, especially if they are counter to what the boss believes!
The company went from 10 mil/year to out of business
in the space of about 3 years.
I will never again work for a boss that would allow that
crap to count more than just doing a good job.
Yeah, sounds and looks to me like Simon has nothing to ever worry about. He does some nice work, and I'll bet he is a great guy to work with.
