This is such a great idea for a forum!

I'm interested to know where everyone gets icons for devices. Do you create your own? At work we had ours custom created by a designer but those don't do me much good at home. I've been looking for a matched set with nice inactive and active states for the following devices:

DirecTV
Windows Media Center
PS3
Xbox360
Wii

I've found some acceptable ones but not a complete set. The xbox one has been the hardest.

Here's some of what I've found.


Right now I'm using the iphoney icons but they don't have active state versions and nothing decent to use for WMC.

I should have been more specific. I'm looking for transparent png's around the 75x75 size but I can resize from larger as long as they are square or very close. This is going on crestron touchpanels.

That's what I was afraid of. Those are the ones I'm currently using but there's not a decent one for WMC and no opposing state versions. I've tried to create some sort of glowing halo effect that's active with that interlock to indicate the current activity, but that came out pathetic.



I'll likely just have to hire a graphic artist to make what I need.

Why not just ask me to make one for windows media center :).



I totally flaked on the active state of the icons. I will work on it this week and add it to the download.

Dont forget to set the face color of your buttons to transparent to get rid of the light blue around the edges of them.

I just added the active state. Nothing fancy, just a glow to the center.

Inactive and Active:



Transparent face, check. That white box you see around the icons above was my poor attempt at a glowing halo.

You icon making junkies should learn how to make Photoshop scripts. They have a whole way to automate things. So you could have a PS script called "MakeActive" and it will batch process all your icons in your set and add a glow effect. (Or whatever effect you want to do.) You could have another script called "MakeBlue" and that will change the background color on all to blue. "MakGreen", etc. You can be creative. Plus you could have a script to resize buttons based on the touchpanel size you are designing for. Let me know, I can program it for you. I wonder if Fireworks supports scripting like this?

I agree 100%, using scripts to modify multiple files is the only way to go. I just converted 700+ channel icons made specifically for the RTI T2-Cs in about ten seconds. I dont use Photoshop however, I have always used Paint Shop Pro, but they have a record feature that you can simply save as a script and every PS plugins works with PSP.

Its interesting to hear about the software everyone is using. I feel like an outsider using Fireworks and then i will read a thread where someone is using gimp and now i find out one of the pros is using paint shop pro. I guess it doesnt matter what tool you use as long as it gets the job done. I feel less pressure to switch to photoshop now :)

The 'great' thing about teaching yourself software is that you learn something new every day. About 6 months ago i discovered that i could name my slices. Why is this important? Now i don't have to rename 1000 graphics from "icon_r1_c1.png" to "icon_xbox.png". When i discovered that i was convinced it was a brand new feature but after checking fireworks mx i realized i had just overlooked it.

I am going to look into automating/scripts. Currently i just put everything on a layer. I build the inactive state and then save-as the layered png file as "whatever_active_layers". Then i just change the fill color. And now that i know how to name slices i just add "_active" to the end of each slice.
