Has anyone tried using an MSC-400 -->RS232F (from URC) -->IOGEAR GUC232 --> HR20? This is in theory (I think) would get the MSC-400 to control the HR20 via rs232 on the USB port on the back of the HR20.

Are you assuming the HR20 has drivers for the IOGEAR GUC232? Or do you know for a fact that it has the drivers? If the HR20 supported this device, I would be pleasantly surprised.

When reading this document ([Link: sbcatest.com]) put out by DirecTV it specifically states that there are 3 USB-Serial Adapters supported. The aforementioned being one of them. In checking other post on remote central several people are using them to their advantage.

That is a great document you linked to, it really explains every bit of the RS-232 protocol for the DirecTV units. It also show 3 diferent USB to RS232 adapters that are supported by these receivers.

curt,
I just did an install with an MSC-400 and HR20-700 controlled via rs232. I used the IOGear USB to serial adapter and it works perfectly.

Note that the HR20 serial control only works at 9600 baud. Also, the MSC-400 serial database does not have an entry for the HR20, so you will have to create a new device and enter the commands manually. Use the document listed previously in this thread to get the rs232 commands.

I have used the IOGear piece many times with AMX with the H20 and HR20, the document is wrong with the 115200 baud rate however, as snarfshark says it is 9600 baud.

There's some additional discussion about serial control of the HR20 on dbstalk.com.

Where can I find the 232 commands at?

Take a second and scroll back through this thread - there's a link to a document which describes the commands.

Snarfshark - did you use any delay between commands. For instance when making a macro that enters channel 2 8 2 enter, do you input any delays between each step?

Thanks for your previous response. Ordered the cables the other day. It is nice to know it will all work when it arrives.

Ive read through that pdf several times. RS232 is still new to me so Im missing something. Is there an example of what the commands should look like?

I have not test these yet. However, this is what I have for the power on command. This is the ascii text within the MSC400 editor. "\xFA\x82"

The HR20 would be a great addition to the serial database! Could someone in the know advise if there are plans for this.

Thanks

I didn't do any channel macros (customer didn't want them), so I can't answer your question. You'll have to test it yourself to see if a delay is necessary.
