User #1  like to still use the DirectTv OEM remote with the DirectTV Satellite Box because its simple. The equipment is in cabinets so RF has to be used

User #2 likes to use the URC remote and therefore has to use IR and emitters.

DireecTV makes you set the remote to IR or RF on their on screen menu. You can't select both.

is this setting irrelevant? IF set to RF, will the receiver still pickup IR from the emitters?

In the past the receiver would allow both. But I think a firmware update may have changed things?

HD Directv Receivers and Dvr's NEVER allowed both RF & IR at the same time. SD R15 & R16 dvr's initially allowed both at the same time. But when they added the option to menu to switch it was either IR or RF not both. But there was a work-around to allow both for SD dvr's, by doing red button reset, it put the dvr in state like it was never set to RF before. But the RF kept working along with IR. Since the only thing you do to dvr to get it receive RF is connect an RF antenna. That work-around never worked for HD receivers and dvrs.

Thanks. All the receivers are HD. On this particular receiver it used to work on both IR and RF so I could use the Mx980 and wife could use the Directv remote.

When the remote broke, we had to reprogram and the menu option only allows for IR OR RF.

The directv remote still sends out both because if in rf mode, it sends a IR signal to turn on the TV.
