Wish I could get you letter writing zealots excited about high tech censorship!

Oh, that is a minor deal compared to My Remote.

Forgive me, the world is crazy, sometimes you just have to let off some steam!
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Maybe people can posts links of where they are filing.  Might help get more people to do it.  Maybe it will not go anywhere but not doing it will definitely not.

That's the one I used for the FTC. Here's the AG for WA State: [Link: atg.wa.gov]

I just put the one from the install on my old Windows 7 laptop on it. Everything works again. Only issue the URCframe is from March 2018. Can anyone send me a more recent one? It would be greatly appreciated. It's like 2 MB so should fit via email.

Edited - Not sure a newer file is necessary because I have all of the new Anthem AVR and Pre/Pros in my current IR database.

I'm seeing results from our pressure!

I opened a ticket with URC on 7/19, pointing out that they cannot do this and to re-open access to CCP or refund my costs. At that time, they answered with the form letter that others got.

A couple of days ago I filed reports with both my AG and the FTC. Both initially followed up with URC to see if they would voluntary correct their behavior, before they would do anything else. This was filed with the same email address as the initial ticket with URC.

Today I received, at the same email address, 3 emails in quick succession. The first opened a ticket to grant access. The second explained I was being granted access for some unknown time until URC can orderly change their policies and restrict access. The third email contained the logon creds.

I haven't tried them and I don't intend to. Access to CCP is still governed by a password, and URC has stated that "we are offering current software users unrestricted access to our CCP software until our policies have been fully updated and the proper communication has been sent." Presumably at that time my creds will then with withdrawn and I will no longer have access to CCP.

This again is not acceptable. URC needs to provide access to the current level of CCP into perpetuity and not subject to their kill switch. I bought the remotes I have with the expectation of CCP access per URC's public policy. They need to provide an installable copy that does not require a password.

I don't know what motivated this change in URC, but I suspect they were contacted by the AG/FTC and realized that they were acting in an unfair and deceptive manner. I urge everyone to continue filing reports and holding URC to their original policy.

I will be educating my AG and the FTC when they followup with me. Y'all should do the same!

Nice!  I also filed a complaint with the FTC.  Hopefully it adds to the pressure.

Same messages for me. The key point in the email was that they were still planning on removing access, but will do it in an informed orderly fashion. I plan on keeping one instance of CCP active with the new creds, and the others on the previous version.

There was never a promise of perpetual updates, so I hope the solution will be an updated version that is "frozen" in time. No more updates, but you have access, and no need for an account.

It's also possible that they will adopt a fee structure to move forward. Pay X per year, or a one-time fee and you will continue to get CCP updates and be able to use the software...without any tech support from them.

Time will tell....

The only thing I know is that I need to keep a CCP instance (and backup) in a working state that keeps them from having any access to it (updates). My guess is that as time progresses the workaround we found (replace URCframe.exe will stop working).

And that's the real challenge. You are correct that URC did not promise perpetual updates, and they are free to change their policy for purchases going forward. I personally think it is also ok for URC to dead-end updates (CCP and IR database) for those of us who purchased under the original policy. But it is normal for software to have to be re-installed etc for whatever reason). So, at the very least, URC needs to provide a standalone installer (not an update) that can be installed and works without a password and will not update to being locked out.

We should continue to demand at least that to satisfy their commitment to us per their original policy.

Where did you write to URC to get them to respond and give you login credentials? Given they "don't do user support", how did you contact them?

Do the login credentials provided work only for CCP or do they work for the dealer web site too? Just wondering.

So, how would they contact a user? My dealer has been gone for years so they can't contact him for him to contact all old customers. And as far as I remember, I never registered with URC but if I did, that was back when I had a bell south email. That's been gone for 20 years.

I'm curious as to what methods you used to purchase the gear.  Did you buy from a dealer using URC's idiotic policy that a dealer can give software out but they won't?  Just curious since they have not sold to end users directly.  For what it's worth, I am glad that they are getting pressure put on them, it is BS how they treat all parties IMHO.

URC did sell to me directly, Hank offered me a chance to buy any URC remote at an employee discount, then gave me sign in credentials for the Control Room so I could download the software. He allowed me stick around the control room to offer my help as seen I done here at Remote Central. This was 2012, I went for the mx-780. He offered this to me 5 years earlier but I didn't take him up on it then.

I didn't buy direct from them, I bought mostly from Mike at Surf (who's now retired I believe). But, because I was a tech blogger at the time, they gladly gave me access to the Control Room which wound up encouraging me to buy more URC.

Many modern user agreements specify that they can be changed at any time, particularly the privacy part, and that the user must check the website from time to time for the latest details. If the user does not accept the revised agreement, stop using the product.
