There are a lot of brands for replacement Battery's for the MX-980. I have tried several with not a lot of good success.

Anyone care to mention a replacement battery brand they have bought from Amazon and used and like?

Why are you not using the OEM?
I usually find that when I'm faced with such choices, the OEM is the best bet. Part # is BATT-MX-980 and URC has them in-stock.

If you are just wanting to be dirt cheap and refuse to pay more than $30+ for a battery; there are 2 problems with that. Even if you can find a replacement battery that worked well for $6.99, there is no guarantee the next time you ordered it you would get the same. Those bottom feeding vendors come & go.
I personally have never found 'any' of the bottom feeder supply to be worth crap. They routinely use low binned parts they get for pennies, to create their cheap product. So no surprise it is suspect at best.

Batteries that have been sitting in a bin somewhere don't work very well. The bottom feeders will purchase stale inventory and sell it cheap. The user has a choice: they can purchase a bottom bin battery for a fraction of the cost and remaining life, or purchase a fresh battery at higher cost and realize full battery life.

I hear you. But isn't there a middle ground? Just because you don't want to pay $30.00 doesn't mean you want the cheapest price. All your points are true. Isnt there some middle ground like $15.00

My example is this. A Porsche 911 branded air filter is 10 times the cost of the lowest priced air filter you can find. OEM Porsche filters are made by Mahle. If you buy the Mahle branded filter it is 50% of the cost of Porsche Branded and I have seen it. Exactly the same except it doesn't say Porsche on it. I would never use the cheaper (non Mahle) brands I outlined in this example.

Its not like there are a million battery producers. A lot of batteries companies simply put their label on it.

That's true, but I'd look for the brand that is most likely to be selling fastest, because that's where you're likely to find batteries that haven't been sitting on a shelf slowly self-discharging for a year or two!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Plus with some rechargeable chemistries and physics, older, never been recharged batteries will not have their expected capacity.

I just bought the cheap ones and I have a new OEM. I'll try to pay attention, but lithium ion degrades with cycles, not really time. Its not lead acid or traditional chemical reaction energy storage, same rules don't really apply.
Sort of think of it like this: miles on a vehicle in a city vs highway.
It's the cycles (miles) that matter. It's going to get much more technical if you dig deeper. The cheapos will have less mAh milliamperage (1000-1300 or less on the NP60s) vs OEM (1350+) so shop for that. As far as who builds it and if it makes a difference - I'll defer to the other folks who commented. Lets just assume, void of starting an interstellar war, that a majority are manufactured in a certain country and the OEM is manufactured in the same country (I just checked).
That's what toys are for...

I have been using the Kastar 1900's with good results in MX980, MX990, and MX1200. They have good life, and (unlike some of the other off brands that are a tad large and don't fit well) fit perfectly.

FWIW . . . $30 to URC is just too "rapey" for me . . . esp. when they are just rebranding someone elses battery.
