Trying to take care of this problem this weekend so cant call tech support

Tried the following:

Went to device manager
Plugged in remote and see unknown device
Keeping it awake, plugged in usb cable
Right click "update driver"
Browse to location of driver:
Program files x86 ->universal remote control -> complete control program -> mx-980 -> drivers -> windows7_vista -> x86 (tried using 64 bit folder previously but it didnt work)

It says the driver installed successfully
Reboot computer
Still "download error cant connect" when trying to download
Also CCP keeps telling me to install windows mobile 6.1
I did that and rebooted but still get same error.

Thanks in advance

Did you go and download Windows Mobile device center 6.1 from Microsoft website or just click the "ok" button when CCP asked?

Do you have a mobile device center application in your start menu?

Whenver I go to the website to install it, it says it is for Windows Vista only. Is that basically wrong?

Yes. Just download the 32bit or 64bit version depending on your system
