URC sells an external RF transmitter that can be added onto their previous network control systems for use with non-RF remotes; it should work with these? URC lighting is mentioned in the Total Control docs (though nothing new there).

Yes, you can add an RFTX-1 to the MRX-10 to control URC lighting. It's the pink jack at the right end of the unit.
Sounds neat. What software do you use on your windows media center pc to enable ip control? Is it this software: http://vmccontroller.codeplex.com/ ?
I'm looking for something similar that works well for windows 7 and would allow for passing information such as the current title being played to a home automation system...

It can be set up either way, Serial to Network or Network to Serial.
I am using aaxeon to control my windows media center computer over the network.
Yes, it's http://vmccontroller.codeplex.com and I am switching to Win 7 soon. I saw posts on the net where people got it to work with 64 and 32 versions of 7
I tried vmcController under windows 7 last year. No worky then, but I'm playing with the new 5/2010 version after reading your post. It's passing the current song/video metadata on 64 bit Windows 7 under telnet; haven't tried 32 bit yet. All I did was run the 5/2010 installer.
However, I have one dumb question: the telnet service for the vmcController doesn't start until WMC starts! This is a huge draw back as I was hoping I could use vmcController to open and close media center. Am I doing something wrong?

VMCController is a background mediacenter application, so you are not doing anything wrong. It would be nice if it was written as a windows service but we can't be picky since it is a free application. huge thanks goes out to the guy who originally opened the source code and the guys who continue to work on it!
Don't expect any of the new stuff before the first of the year. You would think that the SNP-1 would be out first as it can work with existing systems, but that's not what I heard.
BTW, here's a fun clip about URC's CEDIA presence I found on
See if you can identify who each character really is. ;-)
