(Sorry to post this in both URC forums but I didn't know which was appropriate...I don't have CCP but have an MX-980 which I think is considered a "pro" remote)

I have read every thread available on the internet pertaining to W7 64-bit and the MX-980 and not one has helped. Going to device manager and installing drivers directly from the Vista 64-bit directory did nothing (it will say the drivers are installed "URC USB Synce MX1" but it changes nothing). When I connect the MX-980, it makes the "bad USB connection sound", and then a few seconds later the "USB disconnection" sound. I have installed Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 64-bit, and have fully updated MX-980 editor (I do not have CCP).

XP Mode is no help since the device will not connect at all to USB so XP Mode can't see it either.

Basically I have an unprogrammable paperweight now. Has anyone had any luck with this? I am extremely frustrated.

This is the correct forum. If you look at the top of the forum page, you'll see all the covered remotes listed, including the MX-980.

Was the MX-980 connecting to a previous non-64 bit PC, or is this the first time you've tried to connect it to any PC? If it's the first time, you may just have a defective remote or USB cable.

Thanks Mike.

And the answer is yes, I've had this remote for about 2 years (bought it from you, as a matter of fact), and had fully programmed it on my old 32-bit XP machine. When I upgraded my machine 6 or so months ago, I installed W7 64-bit. Since the remote was already programmed and I hadn't made any real changes, I never bothered installing the software on the new machine. Today I just felt like doing it, partially because I wanted to see if there was a firmware update for the remote by chance. The software all installed and updated fine, but I just cannot get this silly thing to connect to the machine and be recognized.

Totally unrelated question, is there a good way to get dust/debris out from behind the LCD screen? I've taken apart an old MX-700 before and it wasn't easy, I really don't want to take this sucker apart.

Thanks again.

Hard to say. It could be something broke loose with the connector in the remote. Also, do you have another cable you could try?

There's no easy way to open the remote. I'd recommend that you don't try.

I tried another cable, same result. Keep in mind the computer is definitely recognizing that a device has been connected, both playing a sound and bringing up the dialog (upon connecting for the first time) for trying to install a driver (which fails). In my experience with a Blackberry where the connector on the device failed, the computer simply did not acknowledge that the device was connected at all. It really seems to be a software issue.

Or is the point that everyone else is having no trouble with the 64-bit Vista driver in W7 64, so there's clearly something uniquely wrong in my situation?

I guess I'll just live with the dust under the screen then. :/

Thanks again for the help.

rlarsen462,
I just bought the MX-980 and received CCP ahead of the delivery of the remote. I have installed it into Win7 64-bit, both as a native install and into a virtual machine of Win7 Enterprise running on linux.

I installed the Windows Mobile Device Center Driver (for 64-bit) into both of those installations. I should have my remote at the end of the week. If you don't have this straightened out by then maybe I can help once I get mine and see which of the several pieces of advice I've found on here makes it work. :)

From the reading I've done on these forums it seems you should be using the driver from the mobile device center instead of the Vista 64-bit driver that shipped with CCP.

My #1 goal is obviously just to make it work so I'll try first in the native Win7 installation. My preferred route beyond that will be to have it working in the Win7 virtual machine inside linux as I really don't like booting to Windows any more. I have the option of installing a 32-bit version of Win7 into a virtual machine if needed, but would prefer not to go that way.

It's possible having CCP is part of the equation too. I only have MX-980 editor.

What do you mean, "you should be using the driver from the mobile device center instead of the Vista 64-bit driver that shipped with CCP"?

I wasn't aware that the installation of Mobile Device Center had drivers for the MX-980? Why doesn't it recognize it if that's the case? Can you point towards a directory to manually install those drivers from then?

Thanks!

FOLLOW THIS THREAD!

I can't believe this actually worked...how the heck do you guys figure this stuff out. I would never have thought using a basic Microsoft driver would get the whole thing to work, but work it does.

Just to add to this a bit. I followed the instructions. Installed the Mobile Device Center and all the rest. This was all before I actually had my remote in hand.

Remote arrived today. I plugged it in, the Mobile Device Center app started, my MX-980 connected, CCP was happy. No big deal, right?

Except I use Linux. I have a Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit guest installation in a VirtualBox VM on a 64-bit linux host. Works like a dream and I don't have to boot to Windows natively to program my new remote. This is nice. :)

I fully expected I'd have to boot to Windows to program the remote. Thanks to the other nerds here that figured this all out and made this part of my life easier. :)

Hi - I have fairly new PC's, a w7 PC and a new Win 8 laptop, both 64 bit. Neither will communicate with my mx-980. My mx-880 amd mx-900 talk fine thru the USB.

any ideas?

As stated make sure you have MDC installed. On ocassion you have to install USB drivers for the remote or as couple other threads describe you can use the Microsoft default drivers.

What do you see? as in will not communicate...
