MX980 windows 10 64 bit installation:
I just got MX-980 after my long beloved MX-950 LCD screen died. I used the same procedure mentioned above with few modifications in the device manager:

1. Download the latest microsoft mobile device center 6.1 64-bit Vista drivers and install.
2. Install CCP (residential version or commercial) based on your availability.
3. Open the "device manager" from the control panel.
4. Open the installed CCP and let it run live update and restart.
5. Plug in your MX-980. Make sure you keep pressing a button on the MX-980 to keep it alive throughout this installation!
6. Look for "Unknown device" in the Device Manager. If windows is trying to install drivers, just close the dialog.
7. Right click the icon and click on "update driver". Then choose "browse my computer for driver software".
8. Choose "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"' then choose "Mobile device" and click next.
9. Select "Microsoft" from the Manufacturer list in the left column. Then choose "Microsoft USB Sync" from the top of the right column.
10. Click next and say yes to the Microsoft incompatibility warning and it will finish installing the necessary SW. You have to make sure that the MX 980 stays on throughout this procedure.
11. If you do everything correctly, MS mobile device center should make the sound and comes up automatically recognizing the MX 980.

Windows 10 creator edition fix: MS mobile device center may not open when clicked unless you do the following;

A) Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 by following these steps;
a) Press “Windows Logo” + “R” keys on the keyboard.
b) Type “appwiz.cpl” in the “Run” command box and press “ENTER”.
c) In the “Programs and Features” window, click on the link “Turn Windows features on or off”.
d) Check if the “.NET Framework 3.5 is enabled
e) Enable it as needed and then click on “OK”.
f) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and restart the computer, if prompted.

B) Right click on Start, and then click on Computer Management > Services & Applications > Services. Scroll down to right-click on "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity" to select Properties > Log On. Switch to "Local System account" with checking "Allow service to interact with desktop" then click OK.
C) Open properties of windows mobile device center and enable compatibility with Vista.
Once device is recognized by MS mobile center upon connecting go the programming steps below:

12. Next step is programming the device which is a bit different from the older MX series.
13. When you open CCP for the first time, you have a choice of making a new file or import a old saved configuration. You can also set up a base station.
The following steps are for new device set up.

A. Click on "create& name devices" and choose either watch or listen screens.
B. To create any new device, you have to choose from a list of icons on the right column and then drag them to the matching columns on the LCD screen. If you don't do that and then rename, they don't show up as added devices under watch or listen columns on the main screen.
C. Once devices are created (e.g., Processor, TV, cable box), then click next and then click on the name of the device. Then choose from the type of LCD screen setup you like from a long list on the right hand column ( I chose "blank" from the bottom of the list).
D. Only after you completed both above steps, look for "add pages" tab on the top of the screen and click it once. This step will add some unknown number of pages to each device, which is essential to save the codes next step.
E. Now look for the codes based on your device from audio, TV, projector etc and you will find the matching device manufacturer name from the left column and model number from the right column.
F. Once you found the correct device codes, look for a button on the top of the screen that says "save all" and click it so it will save all the codes to various pages under each device.
G. Save and repeat this set up for all the new devices then close the box.
H. Once you are back on the main screen, you can double click on each device you created and it should show the saved code names assigned to each page. You can drag and rearrange them or cut and paste them in between pages based on your preference.
I. You can also create various macros on the right column just like the older MX versions.

Overall, I preferred the stand alone MX-950 SW over the CCP, but I like that CCP works well with windows 10 and I can get rid of VMware and XP from my laptop.

I hope this tutorial helps some new users.

PM me if you need any help or software files.

Peterrudy,

I registered on this site 11 years and 8 months ago and apologize for not posting sooner, but this site has served me so well over the years.

Wanted to take this opportunity to say that after being absent for some time, I needed to figure out how to get my trusty MX-980 talking to my Win10 box so I could modify my program. Your thread to the rescue!

Thanks much for taking the time to document how to get the remote to register with the machine. I followed your directions and it worked perfectly.

I'm back in business with my cherished remote and the custom program I have thereon.

Cheers & thanks,
