I gave up and tried to Learn the remote for my HR20. My MX-850 soft keys work fine, but the guide and other hard buttons are not working, even after learning them. The learning process said the IR was good, yet they don't work??? I will try to delete all of buttons again, and re-learn them, but I was wondering if anyone else had this same issue?

Again, how will the current version of the editor get updates??

Thanks,

Steve

I just received my mx-3000 today...i still have no idea if my vendor is an authorized dealer...after reading this forum i finally got to a site that gave me a download of the software after providing my serial number...but I still can't do a live update as the others have stated...I wish I was told about this before I spent my $1000 on something that is outdated from the day I received it...It makes no sense keeping the software from the customer...after all, we purchased the hardware which cannot be pirated and the software is needed to operate the hardware...what is illegal about this...it seems that the only thing illegal is holding back the software from the consumer...someone please get these people at URC to see it from our point of view...

I have updated my MX-700 or MX-3000 in quite awhile and came to these forums in the last few days as I'm looking to buy yet another 'universal remote', possibly from Universal Remote. However, the information regarding the policy changes are of great concern. As I originally purchased the MX-700 and MX-3000 from a dealer I no longer have a relationship with, I feel like I no longer have the benefits of a PC upgradeable device that I paid for with that expectation.

To test all of this information re: Universal's policy change, I went to my local Best Buy. With the MX-850 and MX-350 hanging on their retail wall, I questioned the Magnolia staff about the availability of software for their customers. They in turn asked their 'Geek Squad' folks. To my dismay, neither knew the answer. However, they did open a MX-850 retail box to show me that there is NO software in the box. Essentially, Universal Remote has a retail packaged product that is sold in a retail environment that is completely crippled! Best Buy explained that their installers have the software on their laptops and do the installation. After explaining the situation and that I am as knowledgeable about these products as their installers (and probably then some) and didn't intend to have them do the installation, they phoned Universal while I stood there to check their policies.

The answer they received was that I can download the software from their website but would not have the ability to get updates. They asked about providing the updatable version to the customer and the answer was, no. Best Buy suggested that they would check with management in regard to their policies but I would assume the answer would still be, "no".

With all of this in mind, I am no longer interested in purchasing a Universal Remote product. I am not sure I understand why a product hangs on a retail shelf with no ability for the retail customer to manage the device on their own should they choose to do so. Further, I don't understand why I shouldn't have the ability to 'subscribe' to updates if I choose.

Further, much to my dismay, I cannot register my MX-700 as the registration code (no matter how I do enter it) isn't being accepted. Regardless, I still need to be able to update my own device. I don't recall 'leasing' the device from anyone.

Duh! Don't buy from BB! Problem solved!

Software NEVER came in the box. Never, ever, ever.

BB has the full rights to give you the updatable software. They just choose not to.

Buy from a site like www.surfremote.com, www.bluedo.com, or www.proremotes.com. They are all authorized. I know that Surf Remote automatically sends you the updatable software right after your product is shipped.

Try contacting URC about the serial # issue or see if Eric responds. Chances are you may just need to enter it differently. URC has been helpful in all of my experiences.

But, this isn't the place to really discuss the policy. That monster thread in the other URC forum is.

What MX-700 sofware do you need? Updatable or not?

Best of luck.

Sorry, didn't intend to redirect this thread. Though not a professional installer by trade, I do all of my own remote programming as well as the rest of my technology at home. I'm a technologist by trade and don't usually depend on installers for these sort of things.

I did speak to UR on Friday and received assistance with the serial number as well as having a discussion re: the policy, BB retail, etc. They were quite helpful and offered to assist if I don't get what i need from an authorized retailer.

Never the less, the software I'm in need of is updateable versions for both my MX-700 and my MX-3000.

Thanks again and sorry to have responded with something off topic. The threads in the other forum are way out of control and have turned completely personal.

This is the kind of policy that turns consumers towards competitors. I was ready to purchase the MX-3000 but may I'll wait to see the Harmony 1000. $500 cheaper although we don't know how capable the software is.

UMR's policy on their software is by far the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. I finally got my MX-900 working and I am seriously contemplating returning it.

UMR? OK. Sure. Not sure I know of them.

I find it really crazy if you return such a great product because it takes you a bit of time to get the software.

A huge thanks for this posting. I had just purchased a MX-900 and although the user manual indicated that the software was available at the URC webiste, I could find no links or even a seach input to find same. Your link did the trick and I was able to log on and download the MX-900 editor. The editor seems ot work fine but as indicated in another post does not ahve a setup for the new DIrecTV HD DVR.
As a purchaser of over a dozen URC remtoes (SL9000 and URC200 models to MX-1000 and MX500 models) I am greatly distressed by the sudden aloofness of URC towoards the end customer in favor of "authorized installers whomust have a great trade and lobbying group with URC.
I was distressed also to read on the first page of the owners manual a statement that I had no warranty unless I purchased the remote through an authoized dealer.
I guess I'll start watching this forum for an alert that the HR20 DVR is supported and do another software downlaod - unless URC goes the next step and blocks downloads of the software for serial numbered remotes not sold to authorized dealers !

As far as I can find, the latest software still does not have codes for the HR20. You may be able to use codes from other DTV DVR's if they work. I found under the "Files" section here codes in .CCF for the HR10-250. Perhaps that would work if you import the .CCF into the MX-900 editor through the Universal Browser.

[Link: remotecentral.com]

Other than that, you may have to learn the codes for now.

EDIT: There are codes...check out a few threads in the other URC forum. I think Mike from Surf Remote has some.

Whoever started this post THANKS!

What is the deal with URC? They are taking a BIG step backwards that will lead to demise.

URC - It’s all about making the customer happy. Now that I can’t download their software it might be time to check out the new Harmony remotes (they look cool and have color displays).

I will also be asking for people to submit their software so it can be posted on a friendly download site (will make a nice torrent).

URC - please change your policies back to the way they were – Your new ones SUCK!!
cheers

Eric Johnson from URC started this post.

If you want to argue the policy, go to the other URC forum on this site, then go to the big thread. Can't miss it.

Called tech support today and ask how I was to register without a serial number (my 2 year old device has none that I can find), was told I was out of luck it was not until I demanded to talk to a manager that they would email a copy, but still I can not register to get future updates since I have no serial. I have seen 2 or 3 other posts by people with the same issue. How have other people resolved this problem?

I want to mention that price fixing (which is why they want to use Authorized dealers) is illegal, if one place which is not "Authorized" sells it for $600 and an "Authorized" place wants $1100 then obviously the purchase price is under $600. While I understand there reasoning, is that it is expected that only a professional will perform the installation and they want work in the extra $500 as part of the installation/setup fee, but this is still a borderline illegal and most definitely unethical practice, back when I bought my first MX-700 there was a lot of discussion about these "UnAuthorized sales", and how stop them, since they can not do anything to stop even Authorized Dealers from reselling extra stock on the sly this new software download restriction would appear to be their latest attempt to try restrict the market from selling devices for less than they desire they sell for. For the record another group which likes to use similar practices to inflate profits is the Mafia.

And yes I expect that this post will be moderated away, but I wanted to get this off my chest.
