I don't know whether or not anybody likes Control4 around here, but it seems to me that Control4 would be the best choice from what you're describing. Programming is another story if your not familiar with it, but if.... "My main concern is reliability, especially in the area of RS-232 serial commands and, where applicable, Wi-Fi connection. Also, build quality.".... then Control4 is the best by far.
If your looking at a long investment; something your going to have for quite a while - it might be worth looking into. Serial commands, alarm and lighting integration, thermostat or fireplace control - basically anything that has an interface can be incorporated into your system. The lighting works on Zigbee network which is more solid than Wi-Fi and works with your current electrical wiring (no low-volt Lutron wires to run). Not to mention, it's a lot cheaper than AMX or Crestron.
I'm not sure on the current pricing but the HC300 controller comes with a remote for not much more than an MX-880 and a MRF-350. It can control 2 serial devices, has 1 relay and 1 contact input. For example, you can set up a motion detector to trigger a lighting scene or turn on a favorite playlist when you get home. The possibilities are endless; check it out.

One note to add though... currently my favorite remote is an MX-880. As the remote itself goes, I think it blows away the Control4 handheld (although their coming out with a new one) or any previous MX line plus any Pronto/Marantz remote. Just my opinion - take it for what it's worth.
