IrDA is generally not compatible with CIR. Control of a few IR formats can be hacked, but IrDA by itself is designed for high speed over short distances, while CIR is low speed and high range.

An IrDA port specifically designed to also cover CIR should work fine, but range may not be as good as a CIR only solution.
