I haven't done anything with Yamaha, so I can't be much help there.
I don't see any mention of a null modem in the protocol (sometimes they tell you if a null modem is needed), but I've run across a few products that needed one and said nothing about it.
Make sure that your putting a carriage return (\r) after each command.
