Are you holding all 3 buttons down at the same time? Other than that, I have no ideas at all. The instructions "Press and hold "Display", then press and hold "MUTING" and the "+" at the same time" were taken directly from the manual.
If you can't get it to work, you could try posting this in the
Agoraquest Forum, which specializes in Sony receivers and remotes.
