Start with FAQ B3-01 here and read through the B3 section.
[Link: remotecentral.com]The COM ports on your computer must not have gaps. Meaning you can't have COM1 and COM3 but skip COM2.
If 2.0.4 s/w is the latest, make sure you also have the corresponding firmware on your remote. There is a menu option in the software to load the firmware onto the unit.
