RC News Story
Virtual CEDIA 2005 Tour Early in September the annual CEDIA Expo 2005 was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Although the show is targeted mainly towards home theater and whole home custom installers, the more intimate setting is quickly becoming a favorite place for manufacturers to launch brand new products – and of course that includes remote controls!

Today, after more work than originally anticipated, I’m pleased to release our seventh video report: the Virtual CEDIA 2005 Tour. In this year’s seven minute and twenty second long video you’ll get to see all the new handheld remote controls and accessories from the show, including:

  • Acoustic Research ARR1540
  • AMX Mio Modero R-1
  • Harman/Kardon Take Control TC 30
  • Logitech Harmony 890 Pro
  • Niles iREMOTE
  • Philips Pronto NG TSU3500
  • Philips ProntoPro NG TSU7500
  • Philips RFX6500
  • RTI TheaterTouch T4
  • Xantech SPLCDURC
  • URC KP-100 “Maestro”
  • URC MRF-500
  • URC MX-900 “Genesis”
  • URC TX-1000 “Aegina”
  • URC R5
  • URC R7
  • ...Plus, of course, the ever-famous “amp toss”!
This year’s video also features something new for Remote Central: three downloadable versions. First there’s the “small” edition for dial-up users, then “large” for broadband users, and finally there’s a new “HDTV” version in full 720p high definition glory for extreme broadband users who want the utmost in visual quality – and also have a powerful PC for playback!

I highly recommend watching at least the “large” version for its superior picture and sound quality over “small”. As always, your comments are appreciated.

New Sony RM-AX4000
Shoppers will want to keep an eye out for the latest touchscreen universal remote control from Sony.

The new Sony RM-AX4000 upgrades the RM-AV3100 by adding PC programmability via USB and the intuitive AX Remote Editor software package. The RM-AX4000 includes a similar feature set to the RM-AV3100, including a large backlit LCD display, control of up to 16 components, a preprogrammed code database, Sony’s particularly versatile infrared learning capabilities, plus 24 macros, numerous key macros and 8 timers.

New to the RM-AX4000 is a more activity-based concept, including “XPRESS” modes for automatic macro transmission and special multi-device screens, plus a “Sync-Up” key to synchronize device power and input status. Also new are “Air-Slides”, which allow you to perform common activities by sliding your finger across the screen in different patterns.

Sony’s AX Remote Editor program utilizes a wizard-based approach to setting up the remote, including device creation, code learning, macro setup and so forth. Remote configuration can be done without the use of PC software, although certain advanced functions can only be setup with the editor.

The RM-AX4000 will retail for $199 USD MSRP and should be available in stores very soon.
