As many Remote Central readers will have noticed, we like to upload our video reports in resonably high quality - no "fuzzyvision" here! Up until now that has meant a maximum of 720p high definition, which really isn't that bad but alas doesn't mesh particularly well with our 1080i video camera.

So, for the first time, I've uploaded a test render in 1080p high definition of our You Had To Know documentary on the making of a Philips Pronto remote control. As far as I can tell, this version looks a whole lot better than the previous 720p release!

If you have the bandwidth, give it a view and let me know what you think.

I could not here the audio on my linux system. The video was also in the wrong aspect. WMV is not linux friendly.

Audio is WMA Pro, which does seem to have limited support (ie. the PS3 doesn't support it). The aspect ratio is set correctly - Windows Media Player and the PS3 get it correct - however I have noticed the VLC does not.

The main issue is I can't really find a HD format besides for WMV that the vast majority of users will be able to use right off the bat, without requiring additional codec or player downloads.

My goodness, can't believe I missed this. It looks awesome!

First computer I tried it on couldn't handle it smoothly though. ;)

Played fine in WMP - VLC did display it weird. My vote goes to H.264 though.

The problem is H.264 support isn't very widespread yet. Not that many users have something like ffdshow or Nero installed, but practically every computer has WMV's VC-1 installed.

I'd look to Flash, since that's probably the next best supported MPEG-4, but it's not really meant for HD...
