Getting a remote should be all about functionality and not looks.
I've had the MX-500 for years and can highly recommend it to anyone. It's a remote that you don't have to look at to see where to push for controlling whatever you want to control. You get to know the feel, function and location of your buttons very quickly. The 500 can be bought on ebay for under $70. The MX-700 is a newer model and has better backlighting as well as software programming.
URC have several more models up to the MX-850 that all look the same and there is a reason for that: You can't beat the layout for ease of use.
The wife will be the first one to let you know how beautiful it is ...because it'll take her less than 5 minutes to figure it all out.
