This is probably a dumb question, but I don't have the original remote for this VCR and I am not sure which universal remote I should buy that would allow me to change tape speed. I can control almost everything else I need using the Dish Network remote, but I can't change the tape speed from SP to EP (SLP) so I can record more than 2 hours onto tape.

Not looking to be sitting at home with the ability to launch the space shuttle from my armchair with the click of a button, just something simple. I noticed that most URCs don't have the SP/EP button so I guess I would need one where I can "assign" an extra button on the remote a code for this functionality.

Any insight would be great!

Thanks!

If you were to pick up the radio shack 15-2142, about $10. Using vcr code 0032, you have access to these Advanced codes. You will need to add two zeroes to the front of each since the 2142 only takes 5 digit advanced codes.

To map an advanced code to a key on the RS remote:

1. vcr
2. press and hold P for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 4
4. tap P for one blink
5. enter 0 0 2 2 6, advanced code for TAPE SPEED
6. pick a key

Oh, on a side note.. going thru all the instructions for the remote, it never mentions anything about Code "994". It lists programming functions using 990-996, but skips over 994. Wonder why they do that, like a hidden feature or something. :)

So thanks again for the RC Forums and your help!

I must be missing something because even though I think i can follow the steps on entering an advanced code, I don't understand the part about "using vcr code 0032" to access it. I mean, if I've already used vcr code 0081 to work my magnavox, wouldn't re-doing it to 0032 undo the vcr functions? Am I mistakenly assuming "using vcr code 0032" means to assign a code to a vcr key?

Basically i just need to know by what means I can begin doing the steps to mapping an advanced code to a key (i.e. what "using vcr code 0032" means). I tried making my VCR button "code 0032" then I followed the steps to map the key "100+" to be the "change tape speed" key but it didn't work. Obviously the original poster did it correctly but I guess I messed it up somehow...help?

code 0032 is the sony vcr code in UEI made remotes. The codes in this thread are only for sony vcr's and are useless for magnavox vcrs.

These are the advanced codes for VCR setup code 0081:

Since you are using setup code 0081, your advanced codes lists are here. Use advanced code 114 or 00114 for the speed function, depending on your remote.

One final question: could you direct me to the correct thread for Panasonic tv/vcr advanced codes? (I tested this product on my own vcr first -magnavox- to see if it worked before bringing it to it's true recipient: a panasonic tv/vcr combo).

I want the correct code to primarily change "tape speed" and secondary, another code to add an "exit" function when they use the menu key to set vcr timers (actual exit button on remote unfortunately doesn't work).

I tried searching advanced codes, vcr panasonic but couldn't find what i wanted. Seems you guys have the skinny on the arcane advanced code lists. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

You might have to use setup code VCR 0454, then the advanced code for speed is 055.

I love the internet! there is truly a forum for EVERYTHING...

edmund, thank you so much for your help! using my Cox Cable remote, i followed your instructions, substituting 'setup' for 'P' i didn't think it would work, but it did! i cannot tell you how frustrated i've been trying to adjust the speed on my sony vcr without the original remote. i have tons of kiddie cartoons on my dvr list that i want to record to vcr, and now i can use a few VCR tapes set at EP instead of alot of SP ones.

my husband wants to thank you, too, because you saved him from spending $50 on ordering a new remote!

thanks again! :) :) :) :) :)

I know this thread is like ten months old but still I wanted to add this:

[Link: hifi-remote.com]

It might serve someone anytime.
I used that on a Radio Shack 4in1 15-8102.

Thinking of going for a Sony RM-VL600.
It is cheap but does the job with no bling-bling. ;-)
