color lcd, touch screen that can control the following in my living room:

TV
DVD
stereo/speakers
lights
central air conditioning
etc.

And if possible, to control similar electronics in 2 additional bedrooms. If the remote can be organized via the different rooms, with all the applications from a room together in a folder, that would be perfect.

Looking to spend up to $1,000.

Remotes that look appealing are MX 3000 and Pronto.

1st question - which remote should I get that will match my specifications ?

2nd question - is this really difficult to program (I don't have any experience) or should I hire a professional ? And if so, how do I find a programmer in NYC that will do an excellent job and how much would it cost ?

I recommend the mx-3000 over the Pronto. If you never programmed a remote before its probably best to speak to a pro. They will give you the best answers and suggestions after they take a look at your set-up.
Do you know if your sources have discrete codes? Do you already have lighting control in the house? A pro will be able to integrate everything you want to do. If you want feedback on the remote from the AC to tell you the temp you are going to have to use a two way system like AMX or Crestron. you should also know that URC does not give the software to the customers any more. So you really need a pro to program it. You should also look into RTI. Its cost a little more, but its a great remote.

To find a pro go to Cedia and use the finder service. This is a place where you can find a list of pros in your area.

As long as you buy the URC remote from an authorized dealer you will get the software.

either should work as well (but I tend to prefer Pronto). As for programming, that depends. If you are willing to put in the time and effort, there is no reason why you can't.

I agree with Anthony. I am not fond of the two-handed MX-3000.

Give us a call if you want to review mopdels/options.
