I am going to be adding a dozen channels to the master antenna system at a 400 resident retirement home. A lot of the TVs there no longer have their original remote controls and are using cheap, replacement remotes.

As you are all aware, the menu button on most (all?) replacement remotes only works for one brand of TV. I will have to access the menus on these TVs to add the new channels, but cannot do so on many of them without a remote with a functioning "menu" button.

What is the cheapest universal replacement remote that has multiple "menu" commands in it? Because the TVs with lost remotes are all old, I don't need a new, state of the art remote. I could use a five year old universal remote if one existed, because only the people with old TVs have lost their remotes. Is there anything out there for under a hundred dollars that can let me access the menus on at least most of these older TVs?

I would go with a one-for-all remote, because if the menu function isn't preset via preset code, theres a good chance there is a advanced code for it.

OFA remote are the only ones that take advanced codes, these are 3 & 5 digit codes for individual functions. These are what's available for sony tvs:

Newer OFA remotes like the urc-6820, 8820, 10820 take 5 digit advanced codes, so you would need to add to zeroes to the FRONT of each in that link.

I don't understand the linked page. It says, among other things:

Advanced Codes for TV_0000

A list under the word "TELEVISION" includes this entry:

002 MENU............Guide

I can't find the word, "menu" anywhere else on that page.

Regarding your remarks about "Newer OFA remotes", are you saying that if I take the three digit code number from a list that I use to program my inadequate, cheap replacement remotes and enter it into a urc-6820, 8820 or 10820, that remote will then have "menu" select capability? Don't these remotes come with their own code lists?

First, 3 items below the line you quoted, you'll find:

002 MENU....................menu

The first capitalized entry, is the key name on the old ofa remote that was used to make the list. second lower case function is the actual function name. sometimes the key doesn't match the function.

So the advanced code for sony tv menu on remotes like the urc-6131, is 002. But on newer remotes like urc-8820, its 00002.

To map the advanced code to a key on most non-lcd ofa remotes: First you have to program the tv device with sony code 0000, then:

1. tv
2. press and hold SET/SETUP for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 4
4. tap SET/SETUP for one blink
5. enter 3 digit or 5 digit advanced code
6. pick a unused key

Other lists of Advanced codes for other brands and devices can be found here:

[Link: hifi-remote.com]

They're grouped by device codes, by clicking on TV 0250 brings to Panasonic tv advanced codes. Device codes are the listed in the manual of the universal remote model.
