I am looking for a cheap universal rc for the JVC VCR: HR-VP628U
Thanks

Or maybe a hint about how to open the original rc (to repair it). I took out 2 screws and tried to force it open along the sides, but I couldn't.

Thanks for these infos, but although I looked at your reference, I don't know what to do with these codes. About the Comcast rc, the base price is nice, but when you add up shipping and exchange rate, it comes to $27 canadian.

I bought an RCA rc, but it can't do the job. Since my (rooted) phone includes ir, maybe it's possible to program your codes. Do you know how to do it ?

That's the cheapest I could find in the US. In Canada, a Shaw or Rogers (those are Canadian cable companies, I gather) cable remote will do just as well:

Or any Atlas like the above. When you get the remote, program the VCR or DVD button using the setup code above. That should give you most functions. Any missing ones, use the codes from my list and the linked procedure.

If you want to do something with your phone, I can't help with that. I can only tell you how to program a JP1 remote. My codes only work on JP1 remotes. You'll have to convert them to pronto hex for use in a phone, most likely (JVC protocol, device 67). I've updated my earlier post with OBCs. Then you need to install IR Scrutinizer and convert using the OBCs.
