Is there a way to determine whether a remote is RF?

Most remotes that come from manufactures are IR. who makes the remote in question? What source does it control (TV, Receiver, DVD etc...).
Do you need to point the remote at the gear for something to happen?

If you see a window at the end of the remote or see a LED looking device at the end of the remote it is most likely IR.
