Hi everyone,

I am in need of a stable and easy to use/program remote and I seem to be at a loss here.

On one hand I absolutely HATE the Logitech line as I have used several models in the past and they just don't work well...constantly losing track of items in the macro chain or components not getting the signal, whatever.

I would like to get a remote control that is more robust but I am being told that stepping up to another brand like URC or RTI will require a programmer to set it up for me.

If this is true, I will happily hire a programmer but I don't want to be beholden to one every time something goes wrong or every time I decide to switch out a component.

Is there any remote control out there that is *reasonably* easy to adjust but also more stable than Logitech? If not...maybe one that can be modified easily by a programmer on the web?

Here are my criteria:
*Controlling 5 components that ar IR, 2 that are Bluetooth and one that is RF.
*Do not have line of sight for all of it together (gear in front, projector at back)
*Apartment in New York City (please call me if you are a programmer with a solution!)

Thanks,
Russ ([email protected])

Unfortunately the industry has now geared itself more toward the professional installer, so I'm afraid the answer to your question, in regards to the likes of URC and RTI, is yes you will need a programmer.

If you would prefer to go it alone the only alternative (other than Logitech) would one of the smart phone/tab apps, but you would need to investigate compatibility.

Find a URC dealer who is willing to give you the software. There are a few out there.

Russ,

Are you comfortable working with a programming language? If so, there are some "fringe" controllers that will do what you want. Look at some of the alternative approaches that pop up as advertisements on this site. Note that I'm not being mean by calling these "fringe", some are rather slick, but not mainstream enough to be used by pros. And, as you suggest, many pros like the "lock-in" scheme or consider the program to be the pro's intellectual property.

Personally, I'll work with selected customers on a consulting basis. I do the heavy lifting and they follow on by arranging their own screens. This is not a scheme that works for everyone.

There are a few pro's who apparently work exclusively online. I came across a Harmony system where the physical installer contracted with an offsite programmer. I thought that the results were grim and so did the customer -- that's why I was brought in. We replaced the whole remote system.

I hope that your "Bluetooth" and "RF" devices can be controlled by some other means, otherwise these devices will complicate the control approach enormously.

Give us a list of model numbers that you want to control.
