Greetings. I am a long-time member and remote user who goes back to programming Pronto's and have a shelf full of old universals. However I have not looked at what is available out there in the current retail channel in quite a while.

I have a simple need and trying to help someone out. Just need a recommendation on something that can be programmed with macros (don't really care if it is PC-based or "button-pushing-programming"-based) to turn on a receiver, TV, and DVR and change inputs appropriately. I know with newer equipment going all HDMI can make this easier, but in this case, for many reasons, I have some audio that goes direct to the receiver the old digital audio way.

Anyway for DVR, Blu-Ray, Apple TV, audio-only Ipod, etc....I would just like it to get everything turned on and ready to use.

Quite frankly after that, they will probably use the OEM DTV remote for the DVR, the apple remote for apple TV, etc. Again, I know even the DTV remote can turn on some components, however I need to support both using the TV with built-in audio (so volume is TV volume) and TV with receiver audio (so volume is receiver volume). So those turn-on macros would both be different.

Now if it is simple enough there might be a chance to use the remote for controlling devices also.

I am familiar with Logitech Harmony remotes and perhaps that is still the way to go but have no idea which of their current line might make sense. Certainly some of the higher priced lines are overkill for these needs.

Thanks!
BillB

PS....still using one of my Pronto's!

IMO, JP1 is the way to go. Over a hundred models available, many starting at $5. Can be programmed on the remote or via PC/Mac/Linux with absolutely any function, including discrete power and input codes and do macros of course. Far more bang for the buck than Harmony.

Here's a list:

My current favorite is the Nevo C2 ($16 on ebay). Here's some details and screenshots:

This is my second favorite:
