Can't find a Sony RMT-3000 to save my life, so which computer programmable option would be my best bet to replace it?

I'm fairly intelligent and know a lot about electronics, but nothing about computer programmable remotes...much less capable of reproducing the capabilities of a somewhat ancient, highly specialized Sony SB-V3000 A/V selector that I've had around for ever...and have never been able to find a replacement RMT-3000 Commander that originally came with them...and yes, I am just that lazy that the 6x6 A/V selector isn't much use to me if I have to get up and walk across the room everytime I want to switch things around, so, since I noticed you had the programming codes for it on this site, what's the more affordable computer-programmable remote I could score off of ebay that would be a viable option to program with that code you listed and thereby have finally found an acceptable work around to my dilemma of having a fairly impressive A/V selector but no ability to control it from a distance. Any/all help and advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! Allen S.

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

I'd prefer to find a cheap, older programmable remote I could get off of ebay or something and program that to do it, but if I could do it directly with my PC, tablet, or smartphone, that would also work.

I noticed you have the code for it listed, but I have no idea what to do with that code.

Is there is simple remote control app for my PC running Windows 8.1 that I could use try and do it? What additional IR hardware component (if any) would I need to purchase as well to enable my PC to communicate with the device?

Also, if I wanted to try the programmable dedicated remote option, what's the cheapest one you would suggest I could possibly find used on ebay that would suffice?

I would only be very rarely using the device and remote to control it, so I don't want to spend a lot, but if there's an affordable option, I would be nice to have around to save myself the trouble of having to get up and manually change the matrix setup every time I want reconfigure the inputs/outputs.

Thanks again for you quick response to my inquiry and your assistance. It's greatly appreciated.

Got a Comcast remote?  Other Cable company remote?  You can get a Comcast new shipped on eBay for typically $6.

Assign Setup Code 31758 to the AUX button.  Then use the 994 Command to assign the following EFCs to buttons of your choice.

This programming can also be accomplished with a JP!.3 computer interface cable.  $8 or so.

Wow, 3FG. Thanks! You cats really know your stuff. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, much less in such incredible detail with clearly an expert level of knowledge and specific instructions pertaining to my very rare and unusual device.

I'm blown away by your generosity in sharing your time and knowledge with me.

Again, thank you.

I presume by Comcast remote, you mean something along the lines of this:

[Link: ebay.com]

I'm not sure which specific model number that is as it isn't listed, but it seems to be one of the more prevalent, newer ones, so I presume that would suffice, although if I need to be more specific and to acquire a newer/more advanced one for the codes to work, please let me know.

Also, I wasn't quite clear on the JP!.3 computer interface cable you suggested, and after a few unsuccessful internet searches for that specific phrase, figure you must have meant the JP1 remote interface protocol ( [Link: hifi-remote.com] ) with the specific remote you suggested requiring a version 1.3 cable to connect to it ( [Link: docs.google.com] ) ...although searching online I couldn't find one for less than $30, but hang on one sec, because I was also curious about the potential viability of a third option, which would be acquiring something like a Philips Pronto TS-1000 [Link: ebay.com] programmable touchscreen remote for a minimal amount of money on ebay, but, that would hypothetically allow me to program it to label each button individually thereby eliminating of the confusion that would undoubtedly come with simply reprogramming a Comcast or other universal remote with the myriad of different functions the Sony SB-V3000 I have has compared to a normal TV/VCR/DVD/Stereo/etc.

I could get that early model of Philips Pronto for $22 on ebay, and then with a simple $3 usb-to-serial adapter be able to plug it into my computer to program it, but, if that is a viable option and that were the case, which programming codes would I use?

I noticed the ones you so graciously laid-out and specified for me to hypothetically program the Comcast remote relied on the 994 Command protocol to input the codes into the remote one-by-one manually, but if I were to find an affordable jp1.3 cable and input the codes directly into the remote that way, would they be the same codes? And what it the software/GUI I would use to do that?

Also, one last thing, sorry to be such a bother, but if I bought the Philips Pronto so that I could have the remote buttons backlit and custom labeled to each function of the SB-V3000 versus having to somehow remember or refer to a cross-reference list to remember which button corresponds to what (in the dark...when I would only be using it maybe once or twice a month), which codes would I use to program the Pronto...assuming that is possible?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to me and offering such incredibly detailed knowledge on the subject. You must be some kind of remote grand wizard to not only know which type of universal remotes are capable of being programmed to operate such a rare device, but also where to find them.

I'd be totally lost without you guys. Thank you so very much...and I'm actually learning a lot about how universal remotes work 'under the hood' in the process. Awesome!

The codes Mr Mod posted are in a format called Pronto Hex, and not surprisingly, a Pronto remote will understand those codes.  In fact Philips invented the format, hence the name.

Philips discontinued the Pronto line a few years ago, so I believe that it is best to have Win XP or older operating system in order to get the software to run.  I don't think Mac or Linux are supported. Also, the various models of Pronto remotes require different software packages.  Some of the packages are available for download here.  I suspect that a TS-1000 isn't programmable on a newer computer, but check in the Pronto fora.  Also check if a USB to TTL level signal adapter will work, or if you need "real" RS-232 voltages.  Converters that supply genuine RS-232 voltages are more expensive and difficult to identify.

Regarding a Comcast remote, the example you linked is OK, but this one is new and $6 shipped.  Any Comcast or Xfinity remote that has a similar shape and a red OK/Select button will work.  You would use RMIR software if you want to use a computer (easier than typing in a bunch of 5 digit numbers, since you can just cut and paste the EFCs I posted).  RMIR runs on 32 or 64 bit  Windows, Mac or Linux. Here's a <$10 cable which is known to work. It has a long shipping time, however.  Make sure that you get a cable with a FTDI chipset and which supplies a RTS line.

Awesome! I'll look into all the options you suggested.

Once again, thank you SO much!

you can also use a Sony RM-AX1400 or a RM-NX7000 and program that quite easily, these can be found cheaply on Ebay.
If you go down this path the following codes can be used, you will need to make a preset file though which i could step you through on how to make one.
