Hello guys,

I have a Musical Fidelity a5 CD player, and the remote was broken and has been thrown away. A replacement costs £130, which is $200... for a basic remote! So I would like to avoid that, all I need is basic Play, Stop, Pause, Next, Previous, and maybe eject.

Musical Fidelity is a bit of an esoteric brand and I very much doubt there are any remotes out there who would have codes programmed for the A5 which is about 12 years old now, and was rare even then...

Is there a way to program a CD player like this with a generic universal remote?

I would very much appreciate your advice.
Thanks,

Mark.

Yes, many universal remotes will work at least partially.  This CD uses the RC5 IR protocol, device 20.  It's easier to find older remotes that will shoot the correct signals, but there are plenty of new ones that will work.  I recommend remotes made by UEI-- for example OneForAll, because even if a code (e.g. Eject) isn't built into the remote, you can manually add it by entering 5 digit EFCs

Since you appear to be in the UK, get for example the URC 7140. You're looking for a setup code like Audio 1189, which will probably do everything you want without customization.  If you get instead a URC-7130 (which doesn't have Audio setup codes), it will probably be necessary to use  Video 1367 and customize every button with the 5 digit EFCs listed below. Even a URC-7120 will work using TV 1506. Lots of other OneForAlls may work, so ask  if you see one you like.  Use the 994 Command Instructions to assign EFCs to buttons.  In the table below, ignore the OBC numbers.

function EFC  OBC
Play    37613    53
Intro    37525    43
Clear    37629    49
Prog    37533    41
Stop    37601    54
Pause    37625    48

Shuffle    37449    28

3FG, thank you very much for your input!!! I will follow your advice and look into the URC 7140 or the other ideas you mention, that is most helpful!

Kind regards,
Mark.
