Currently have a URC 8910 (believe that's the model #) remote that is great but old and dying. Looking for a replacement.

Our main media is through XBMC, and the computer has a standard MS MCE IR receiver attached.

TV is an Insignia LCD, and receiver is a couple year old Onkyo. Have original remotes for both if needed for learning.

Basically, I want a fairly simple remote that can do the tv normally for watching live tv (ideally something that our little kids can handle), but switches to a "HT" mode where most buttons map to the MCE remote codes, but volume control the receiver.

Can a normal learning remote handle having different buttons on one function come from different real remotes? I programmed the URC with a bunch of Excel files and a parallel cable ages ago - don't even remember how any more. I do remember the only reason I got the HT mode volume working though is because the remote specifically supported a "HT mode" where the volume mapped to a different device.

Our URC does it beautifully - the "tv" button has all the buttons mapped to TV functions. I use a couple of the extra buttons to switch inputs on the tv (ie one's mapped to cable input, one to HDMI input). Then hit "SAT" on the remote and it then controls the XBMC machine and the receiver.

Suggestions? Is this something that any average learning remote can do these days and I'm overthinking it?

Any universal remote can control multiple pieces of equipment with one button press...

Im a huge RTI fan. Amazing products and also they have someone currently beta testing a two way interface for XBMC.

I'm not sure a guy who's been using a $20 radio shack remote for 10 years is looking to drop a grand or more on an RTI and hire a programmer. If I'd been looking to replace my 2000 Honda Civic, would you recommend a new Bently?

Tim, if you can dig out that old cable, you can easily add MCE codes to your 8910. Our software has greatly improved since the early days of using excel. If you want a new remote, the $15 RCA RCRP05B is very similar to your 8910 but lacks the LCD. It has MCE codes. Harmony is another good option. Decent ones start around $50. I also like Xsight. The $30 12G is excellent, and the $70 18G is even better.
